DP said afterward that he thought last year, Shevon had a lot of turnovers trying to do things too quickly. Hence he encourages him to take his time once he gets the ball in the post. Not all that upset with the 3 sec lane violation; however, he recognizes that there is an ideal balance to strike and knowing when you should go up quickly.
Dixon has an impressive touch--scored with each hand and I think made a 3 pointer. Strikes me as already better than Trey Porter although every bit as thin. If there is a Muscala in this class, he would be the one.
During the Q&A, I asked him about recruiting. He said according to NCAA regs, he can't comment on those that have verbally committed. Recruiting is a relationship building exercise and he felt that they did in 2 months what normally would be a 2 yr process.
DP also said that some of the guys who looked good shooting 3s today hadn't looked all that good in practice and that some that didn't look good shooting 3s actually had looked better in practice (Otis perhaps?).
Clearly Paulsen is a hands-on coach, with much to say during the scrimmage, during the time outs, and occasionally stopping play to demonstrate what he wanted. Much more of an interventionist than Hewitt. As has been suggested, he actually does "coach" and given his past success may indeed be the tonic the program needs. Still, as he admits, we have a long way to go with the veterans having to learn his system as much as the freshman.
So it may be a bit of a slog getting to where we need to be, but as the Chinese proverb says, "a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step".
