Unfortunately, "heckling" is now being equated to "bullying" when, if done properly and effectively, can be witty to the point of making the target laugh and thus throw off their game. There were many a game back in the day when members of the FSC would sit along the baseline close to the visitor's bench and heckle the opposition to this effect. Of course, it was much easier to get their attention when there were only about 2-3K in the arena... :D

The FSC had their day, to be sure, but waaaaay back, when we still played basketball in the Lynn Gym, i.e. what is now the RAC before it was the RAC, there was a group called the Bastards. They sat in the stands right behind the visitors bench and would ride them all game long.

I made a CAA ref bust out laughing during a timeout once. He had his back to the student section and he was pretending to ignore us, but he heard me. It helped that the Brown Spaceship was mostly empty.
Hmmmm... I feel a little empty here. This story is missing a hugely key element, something like, "What exactly was imparted to said referee?"

C'mon, man, I could use a good laugh.

It just seems ironic to me that we are are trying to brand our school and team as MASON, but our student section is branding themselves with the part we are trying to step away from.

If they were going to rebrand, Paulsen's Platoon would have been a modern twist of the original name.
That was going to be my comment.

Sounds like some church middle school group trying to come up with a "cool" name for themselves.

Who did come up with this name? It wasn't the AD, was it? It's a pretty generic and uninspiring name.

Saw this on my news feed today. vcu will begin selling beer at their basketball games. I bet section 115 would be on board.

This is something that could help make our student section a little louder, bring more people out, and create extra revenue. The question is at what cost, we have a very family friendly atmosphere and I don’t want to take away from that. I wouldn’t mind having a couple beers in my seat though rather than only in the green room before and during the half.

Probably will limit sales after a certain time. For example, beer sales end at 10min mark of 2nd half. Not sure how you limit each purchase. Besides, it might be better for some of our wine and cheese fans to start chugging some beers and get their arses up and yelling for once.

Max of two beers per purchase, as is the case with most professional sport venues. I think this could help more than it would hurt - whether that's game attendance, atmosphere, etc.

After chugging 5 or so before the game its usually kind of nice to have a 45 min break before chugging a couple more at half time. Definitely think we should sell beer(they already have everything set up for concerts and rodeos)... maybe the student section would actually get loud

They sold beer at the Mystics game, somehow rioting did not break out. Or at the many concerts, MMA, boxing, etc. events that have occurred their for decades.

It's easy enough to have "dry" sections of the arena if they're super concerned about being family friendly, but I really can't see anyone getting out of control. The potential revenue/louder atmosphere far outweighs the odd drunk idiot.

I mean in 115 we get asked not to yell/hiss by fellow Mason fans... and we are already drinking from Gold Room... If they see us with beer in our hands it might escalate

So I know it’s fun to beat horses on the boards, but has anyone ever asked someone from the AD about selling beer at games? If so, what did they say?

And the 115 crowd I suspect will have even more fun this year :D

They are a dying breed, Rick (No really, they are old and will die soon). Keep annoying them. In fact the frequency of their complaining will be a baromoter of the program's success.

I plan on having my share of fun in 115. The couple in front of me, who used to ask if my friend and I could cup our hands and yell toward the ceiling are gone. Hopefully some loud and rowdies have replaced them. I understand the hissers are now in front of me. Good job! I never understood the mentality of wanting/expecting quiet at a college basketball game. Quiet at the opera? Yes. A movie? Yes. A classical concert? Yes. A petting zoo? Sure. A European soccer match? Nope, don't think so. It's all about the venue.

Right but no one is actually out of line in 115. It’s still the old bastards problem if they don’t like it; it’s not like you’re going to get bounced because you’re not doing anything wrong, regardless of whether there’s a beer in your hand or not. The only thing that would change is the school would get a couple extra bucks in concession money.

One question that would need to be answered is, would the sale of alcohol during a game cause less people to join hospitality rooms, and thus lowering the money donated to the Patriot Club? Would current donors be less likely to join if they could get beer elsewhere? Not sure the answer to that, but if the threat of losing money exists, I can't see them getting behind it.

One answer could be to allow the sale of alcohol during the game in sections of the concourse that are only accessible to those that are Patriot Club members. Then, maybe more people would join so that they could grab a beer during the game.

It doesn't really concern me (beer is always offered at my house during the games... and the price is right).
