I am surprised to see that Oduro has been starting over calixte this season. I always thought Calixte provided the muscle and post defense to contend with bigger teams and allow wilson to protect the rim.
What is Oduro doing that enhances the Mason defense?
Good question. Calixte is 6'8 but he always seems like a nontraditional big to me. He outworks everyone but hes not really a big who is going to crash the glass and post up to score. Love how he operates, but I don't think he is the big that Paulsen always wanted.
Oduro is probably more of what Paulsen wanted and what Reuter was supposed to be. He has a little bit more height to him (6'9) and bulk, but his basketball IQ is a bit higher in the sense he can crash the glass on both ends and he also (although it hasn't shown up much this year) can shoot it from outside which gives another element to his game. Everyone thought he would be a bit raw since freshmen bigs are usually raw, and he is, but he has proven the ability to adjust much quicker than one would thought. I think Oduro has rotated better on the defensive side of the ball than Calixte and with his offensive rebounding, that's where his extra minutes have come in.
I think pairing Oduro with a guy like AJ really helps Mason out up front giving a nice rebounding/shot block combination on the defensive side. But the big advantage Oduro gives is the offensive rebounding.
