Game Thread: Longwood University (1-0) at Mason (1-0), Friday, November 8th, 7 PM (ESPN+)

My impression at 1:×5 am:

I was impressed with the 12000 attendance. I had not seen that since we played david Robonson and tim Duncan's.

So f**king cool the tailgate. I've dated redheads before and even married one and the one by George got to go to the tailgate was f**king smoking. After being 47 and a marriage to a redhead its time to definitely admit I dig redheads.

So great when you come ho e and Tokyo Drift is on. Being a gaijin in a faraway city is tough yo

If Javon Greene guns threes season gonna be fine yo. If no we screwed all night ling!!!!

This isn’t news, but Paulsen is awful; AWFUL, at drawing up end of game/half plays.

Back door call at the end of the first half vs Navy was beautiful though, he’s improving and calling a lot more out of bound plays. He got an iso for Miller tonight that we will see again.

For future reference Jollay, they've blocked off the first 2 aisles of Lot A, near the creek and across the road from the Aquatic Center parking lot. I think the plan is to do that for future tailgates as well.

Didn't go myself.....any reports on how many people showed?

Jolly showed up and it’s appreciated. Honestly...6 cars reserved spots, fortunately for those groups, Giant Killer brought the fun. Everyone essentially tailgated at our setup. I’d say max we had 45 people. Those 45 people are going to tell their friends though. We fed a lot of random students today, they’ll be back.

As far as Who fought for these tailgates, it was this Health and Safety department at Mason working with the student government. Apparently at our last homecoming the ambulance came 13 times so instead of canceling all together they decided to make it more common place.

Two stats that caught my eye:

* 6 guys had 4 or more rebounds and that included neither AJ nor Miller, who had 3 apiece. This team is gonna have to gang rebound on the defensive end because our bigs are not great natural rebounders.

* 8 players had at least 1 assist and the team had 14. I know that number goes up when you are hitting jump shots, but I do think this team is sharing the ball much better than the last couple years (when guys mostly stood and watched Otis dribble). Hopefully that continues when Kier comes back.

My $0.02:
-Another crazy cover. They missed that last short jumper and kept the game at 11 (line I saw had moved to 10). We are 2-0 ATS.
-Greene made some huge 3s, seemingly answering every big 3 they made.
-I have a feeling we are going to see one of the three freshman have to play well every game. And since they are freshman, we can't say ahead of time who it will be. Tonight Oduro stood out for me
-AJ, smh. his blocks were amazing. I swear one he jumped from across the lane to the other block.
-give the boys credit, they could've folded but didnt let the game get away
-great student turnout. but man, they were really quiet.
-loved the Green Machine with Baby Shark
-also nice moment bringing the Little League World Series team out on the floor
-I know our OOC doesnt have much flash, but given where we are right now I think this is the kind of schedule we need

Oduro has a bright future imo despite the one talent scout here that hammered him mercilessly before he even enrolled. He obviously has a very steep learning curve, but he has soft hands, passes very well, communicates really well on defense and believes in his shot even from 3. If he didn’t have that range then DP would have pulled him. He has a definite future here. High IQ kid.

I'm hooked. Loved talking to you guys and thanks again for all you two do. I think some tailgating is DEFINITELY in order for next Saturday, I hate the onerous registration process but prob will register a Jollay vehicle and bring the fam.

Nice w, loved seeing the contributions from Oduro. AJ is playing out of his mind and Hartwell has embraced being a scoring point guard.

I only didn’t watch the part where Greene got red hot. I’d love for him to be a little more consistent from deep, versus red hot or ice cold.

The team has length, size, and moves well on defense. I don’t expect them to win the league (just way too young), but there’s real talent to work with and develop.

Buy games aren’t the most fun, and it’s essentially a glorified practice, but I do agree that having a bunch of buy games at this point is fine.

Early over-reactions:
We're going to end up improved at every single position over last year.
Hartwell this year is likely as good as Otis last year, and XJ this year is already better than Hartwell last year.
AJ this year is already better than Reuter last year.
Everybody else is a year older and a year better.

All three freshmen are going to end up really good players at GMU. They're going to be hell on wheels when they're upperclassmen. (I know the game looks a little much for Daddy right now, but he's a smooth athlete, and the pieces are there. I'm confident he'll put them together)

Two things I’ve noticed about the freshmen is how quick XJ is. Seems like he has the ability to get around any defender with his first step.

Daddy still seems to have some court awareness issues but his effort and fight in chasing down loose balls and rebounds are great. Once he finds his offensive game he will be a good player for us.

Oduro seems better than advertised and you can already see him gaining confidence from game one to game two. So happy to see him know some big man fundamentals about keeping the ball high, not bringing the ball down low with a power dribble for guards to steal. One play that stood out is that quick spin move for an up and under layup. All fundamental stuff that we have tried to teach bigs for 4 years in the past.

You definitley saw something in Oduro in the Navy game that I did not. It's very early in the season but he isn't as stiff as advertised/expected and quite honestly, he played with confidence out there. Didn't think twice about shooting that three that barely missed and rattled out.

Again, it's early but I savor each win and suffer each loss ....... and so far I am grateful for not expereincng the latter.

After Navy I posted about how much time our ballscreen motion offense wastes with the ball in Calixte's hands 15+ feet away from the basket, where he's not a threat to pass, drive, or shoot. Saw a couple things last night:

- First play of the game was a quick hitter hi/lo action where Greg had the ball in the high post and threw a nice lob entry into AJ, who was being fronted. Nice easy bucket for AJ and I'm almost certain they drew this up deliberately, since Greg hasn't shown the passing chops to improvise.

- Oduro was stuck with the ball in the high post at one point and no one was coming to bail him out, so he just... dribbled out. I was kind of shocked because I didn't think Oduro could do that, and I don't think I've ever seen Greg do it.

Other thoughts:

- Oduro looks like a quintessential Paulsen 5. Moves well for his size, defends with his feet/ positioning, has touch around the basket. Shot looks good too. Might surpass Calixte soon, because Greg is limited offensively and a liability at the line. But we've finally got depth at the 5!

- I asked Jamal about attacking ballscreens in the presser and he said it's basically all he's been working on since he's been here. I love how he's a threat to pop or drive - just like Otis - but the critical difference is he has a floater. Otis never developed one and had to get to the rim for all sorts of tough buckets, which contributed to the beating he took over the years.

- I only counted one time AJ took himself out of rebounding position by trying to block a shot he had no chance at. Progress! Not complaining about the five blocks, but I would love to see him try the Bill Russell, where instead of a volleyball spike into the earth's core, he tips it and maintains possession. One can dream.

- Javon might be emerging as The Guy in Kier's absence. Hit some big threes when our three-frosh lineup let Longwood back in it.

- XJ drew Shabooty for large parts of the game and did great. Shabooty finished 3-14.

- Goanar made exactly one (1) aggressive play on offense that was good to see. Drove, spun, and pulled up for a short J over a smaller defender. If I'm Dave I make sure he takes three of those per game until he gets his mojo back.

- Jordan's been a little quiet to start the season. I know he says his natural position is on the wing, but pulling him away from the basket neutralizes his offensive rebounding superpower. Not sure how I feel about this yet or if it will rectify itself, but we'll need more than his 8+3 average against good teams.

- Dady (actually pronounced Dad-zee, which somehow makes it even cooler) probably shows out at some point OOC. Still getting up to speed, but he's an athlete and fought four some hard rebounds. Really like what I'm seeing out of this class.

Overall I think Dave is still messing around with lineups. The 3 frosh lineup gave up most of the lead and he still kept them in, then we pulled away with the starters minus Calixte. I'd expect to see this all OOC, then a much shorter rotation in conference play.

Anyone else love the replay feature on ESPN+? Love skimming through the game next day.

I know it sounds dumb, but does Kier come off the bench when he returns? Miller hasn’t done much but he’s playing a new position and have to imagine he develops and takes control of the 3 spot.

There's just no chance. Either Miller or Greene becomes a killer off the bench. (I can actually see Greene being our version of Lou Williams)

Well and he IMMEDIATELY got dunked on because of it, so it was like some classical pavlovian negative conditioning

He probably will his first few games until her gets back up to speed, but if he’s anywhere close to what he gave us last season, there is no way you start him on the bench.

Miller has to learn to take some 3s, especially when he’s open. It would also be nice if they actually got him the ball at the FT line when he’s sitting in the middle of a zone instead of just ball faking a pass to him. Would also like to see that AJ pass to a cutting Greene be a cutting Miller a few times a game too.
