It’s official, we are somehow in worse shape than we all thought...And Fordham beats Dayton 55-54...
Two guys that can shoot and a guard that can play pesky on ball and help side defense is the difference between us and Fordham. They also have a soph big that looks like he has hit puberty too
Yeah that Soriano kid is legit. Surprised he hasn't transferred yet. Local kid they got. Even his backup looked like a man.
I wanted mason to press in this game. Not that fake press. They were short handed, so push them and make them work.I think there's some nuance here in that when our press doesn't generate turnovers it does push opponents deeper in the shot clock. I noticed a few times Dayton taking 8-9 seconds to cross halfcourt and starting their sets with 15-17 seconds left on the shot clock. Usually that's a good result but it played into their hands in this case. Not sure tactically how they could have adjusted without being much more aggressive, but considering Crutcher and Watson are such good ballhandlers that could've gotten burned too. Only two steals all game and only 12 TOs for Dayton is still pretty bad considering they had two guards play 40 minutes though.
Soriano will be their next P5 transfer after Neubauer gets the boot. He’s a horse.

The pace of Dayton's game against Fordham was even slower than the pace of the Mason game.
According to KenPom, the Fordham game last night had 58 possessions. The Mason game had 63 possessions.
Love this discussion but I don't think I agree with moving Kolek to the point.
The way I see it, the ballscreen motion offense needs guards to be good at attacking downhill off of ballscreens in order to be effective. We have not had this for various reasons - XJ doesn't have a jumper to fear so defenders can sag, Jamal struggles with physicality, no one is hitting deep balls to stretch the defense, etc - so our problems on offense start at the point of attack. We've all seen dozens of ballscreens per game, and sometimes more than one per possession, where the screen fails, the ballhandler goes nowhere, and the ball swings around the perimeter harmlessly. This is the fundamental problem, it's why buckets always feel difficult, and I don't think moving Kolek to the point changes this.
I'd rather keep him primarily off-ball. Having a shooter that you need to stay out on is valuable in any offense, but opening up room for XJ and Jamal to create is desperately needed. Kolek is still a huge part of the offense but doing most of his damage coming off screens and curls. Not married to this take and maybe he'll be a fine PG but I don't quite see it yet.
Kind of and not bad but not great. Better than Jamal or XJ though. Not a strong dribbler makes a ton of freshman mistakes with passes that he shouldn’t attempt. But again I’d rather have him there than XJ and Jamal. Hopefully Polite steps up so Kolek can not have not do that as well as being our only real shooting threatI haven't watched the past couple days (work is killing me), but I see that Kolek appears to be the only point guard candidate starting at the moment (and was the leading assist man among guards). Has he been running the point, and if so, how has it looked?
