So I'm certainly not embarrassed after that performance. Once again Mason left it all out on the floor and I saw a competent game plan and adjustments as best as the staff could do. That said other than that run where Mason dictated the game and bullied Dayton around, Dayton controlled the pace. Some of the ref calls were awful against Mason. Dayton has 7 players and yet a full complete team that's experienced wasn't able to pull out the W. Crazy to me and that shows me once again that Dave is over is head because coaches who succeed at the A10 level find a way to steal that type of game especially when you have a full roster.
Few other thoughts
-It was nice to see Greene get back in the flow of the offense and hit some big shots. It looked like he was enjoying being able to contribute.
- Kolek is fantastic. We should enjoy watching him play because unless Dave turns this ship around, I have to think he is going to be headed elsewhere with a new coach. Kid will have options.
-Love seeing the defensive wrinkles. Some box and 1, some match up zone. It really took Dayton out of their game a bit.
-Refs had some awful awful calls. Greene got elbowed but got called for a foul. They also missed the over and back at the end of the game. I don't blame Dave for flipping his shit, the game was over and I think that was more to make a point than anything.
-The And 1 that Dayton got at the end of the game was awful, it seems like we still struggle with help side defense or having our bigs come and help against penetration to the rim. Hartwell is still a liability on the defensive side but Miller and Greene didn't help on that play, which left AJ trying to block the ball and he ended up fouling.
- Someone needs to help Oduro toughen up a little bit on the glass and on the defensive side of the ball. They can steal the ball from him and someone needs to show him how to be a little more aggressive. I like his game in general but feel that hes not a real A10 big quite yet.
-Polite looked better today facilitating against the zone.
As much as I saw good things, the only thing that matters is wins and losses. It is year 6, and Mason just lost to a Dayton squad that has like 7 players that are active. I don't think Mason has the talent and/or the coaching to make it up to the top tier of the A10 which continues to be the reoccurring theme.
Onto the next game, whenever that may be. vcu is on suspension, so we'll see who Mason plays next.
