So I'm certainly not embarrassed after that performance. Once again Mason left it all out on the floor and I saw a competent game plan and adjustments as best as the staff could do. That said other than that run where Mason dictated the game and bullied Dayton around, Dayton controlled the pace. Some of the ref calls were awful against Mason. Dayton has 7 players and yet a full complete team that's experienced wasn't able to pull out the W. Crazy to me and that shows me once again that Dave is over is head because coaches who succeed at the A10 level find a way to steal that type of game especially when you have a full roster.

Few other thoughts

-It was nice to see Greene get back in the flow of the offense and hit some big shots. It looked like he was enjoying being able to contribute.
- Kolek is fantastic. We should enjoy watching him play because unless Dave turns this ship around, I have to think he is going to be headed elsewhere with a new coach. Kid will have options.
-Love seeing the defensive wrinkles. Some box and 1, some match up zone. It really took Dayton out of their game a bit.
-Refs had some awful awful calls. Greene got elbowed but got called for a foul. They also missed the over and back at the end of the game. I don't blame Dave for flipping his shit, the game was over and I think that was more to make a point than anything.
-The And 1 that Dayton got at the end of the game was awful, it seems like we still struggle with help side defense or having our bigs come and help against penetration to the rim. Hartwell is still a liability on the defensive side but Miller and Greene didn't help on that play, which left AJ trying to block the ball and he ended up fouling.
- Someone needs to help Oduro toughen up a little bit on the glass and on the defensive side of the ball. They can steal the ball from him and someone needs to show him how to be a little more aggressive. I like his game in general but feel that hes not a real A10 big quite yet.
-Polite looked better today facilitating against the zone.

As much as I saw good things, the only thing that matters is wins and losses. It is year 6, and Mason just lost to a Dayton squad that has like 7 players that are active. I don't think Mason has the talent and/or the coaching to make it up to the top tier of the A10 which continues to be the reoccurring theme.

Onto the next game, whenever that may be. vcu is on suspension, so we'll see who Mason plays next.

It was right there for the taking, then we stopped doing what was working. Gonna go down as a big “what if” come March...

Well I told you Crutcher and Watson could beat us by themselves and that’s basically what happened.

Let's give some credit to the freshman from Finland in his second game after joining the program following the fall semester:

I will not...I refuse.

Plus, if you look at the play-by-play, from the 2:41 mark when we were tied 63-63 it goes -- Watson made layup (assist Crutcher), Watson made dunk (assist Nwokeji), Crutcher made FT x5, a whole bunch of missed shots and turnovers by the Patriots, end of game.

Basically same as last year’s game. Just couldn’t finish.

Looking over the box score this morning reminds me of how misguided our strategy was yesterday with their depleted lineup. Instead of attacking them to get them in foul trouble, we played passively and allowed them to get away with winning with only seven players (none with more than three fouls).

We only took 11 FTs the entire game, and at no point did Wilson, Johnson, Kolek, Hartwell, Polite or Hadera EVER make it to the charity stripe. Think about that for a second. Those six players played a combined 110 minutes and not once did any of them draw enough contact while shooting to warrant a free throw.

Dayton's worst nightmare going into this game shorthanded was getting into foul trouble, and we were more than happy to oblige them. No, we are not a great FT shooting team, but it would have been nice to dictate the outcome of the game for once instead of always reacting to what the other team wants or needs us to do.

The tone for the game was set in the first 5 minutes when we came out and bricked several jumpers without once trying to get to the rim — even though, as you accurately note, Dayton could not afford to strongly contest penetration without risking the loss of scholarship players to foul trouble.

We got more aggressive after halftime and got the lead by attacking them on both ends, but it makes you wonder what exactly was discussed prior to the game — that first half was some weak-a** sh!t against a severely depleted opponent. Inexcusable in my book.

Good post from Tom and completely accurate.

This game gave me same vibes as when Hewitt zoned up UPenn for different reasons.

Non-sensical, though I do give DP credit for his halftime adjustments.

https://www.daytondailynews.com/spo...to-first-a-10-win/SB3HQ5T5YRGGFINDKADTYGM3RM/:

"On Saturday, Dayton played with seven scholarship players: a senior, two fifth-year seniors and five players [Note: actually four players] who had not played in a college game before this season. The Flyers were even shorthanded in the coaching department. Assistants Anthony Solomon and Ricardo Greer were not at the game for undisclosed reasons.

Somehow Dayton found a way to deliver its strongest offensive performance of the season: most points, highest field-goal percentage (54.0), best 3-point shooting (12 of 25, 48.0) and fewest turnovers (12)."

'Everybody that played tonight really contributed,' Grant said. 'I thought they did a really good job. On a relatively quick turnaround, the guys were able to figure some things out on the fly and be able to make plays. We out-rebounded them tonight, and they’re one of the best offensive rebounding teams in our conference. It was a great team effort to get on the glass. I thought we did a good job being able to handle the different defenses they threw at us: from the press to zone to man to triangle and two. We took care of the ball tonight. All those things factored into us getting the win.'

Dayton gave up four offensive rebounds and two second-chance points to George Mason. Both of those areas had been weak spots for the team in the first six games.

Two newcomers, Mustapha Amzil and Zimi Nwokeji, led the team with six rebounds each. Amzil also scored 15 points and is averaging 18.5 through two games. The last player to score 37 points in his first two games for the Flyers was Obi Toppin, who had 18 and 19 against Coppin State and North Florida, respectively, in 2018.

Of course, Toppin had a whole season of practice in the program before debuted. Amzil practiced three times before joining the starting lineup Wednesday.

'I didn’t know Mustapha’s last name until the day of the La Salle game,' guard Ibi Watson said. 'We were just meeting him and getting to know him. He’s an amazing piece. He’s a guy that doesn’t lack any confidence at all.'”
