KenPom doesn’t reflect that their best big man, PF Chase Johnson, either quit or got kicked out of school (depending on who you talk to) prior to the LaSalle game Wednesday.
He’s kicked out of school. No grades per Dayton’s beat writer. Second year in a row. The concussion stuff is folk loreIt's unfair to suggest that Chase Johnson may have been kicked out of school - https://www.daytondailynews.com/spo...s-for-second-time/7PAUQGMNQJFZBOGNIVI22O3FKM/:
"Dayton Flyers forward Chase Johnson announced Wednesday on Instagram he’s stepping away from basketball to focus on his health and school.
The decision by Johnson, a redshirt junior forward who started the first five games, comes almost one year after he left the program and took a medical leave of absence after being diagnosed with post-concussive stress syndrome. He announced last summer he would return to the program."
Not at all. Excellent take IMOSo, I can't be the only one curious about the idea of Kolek starting at point.
Like, no he's not a cat quit dribbler and no he's not going to blow by you with moves and stuff but he'sa good passer, he sees the floor well, and he's a good enough ball handler to bring the ball up and initiate offense.
He's also aggressive enough to try stuff. Hartwell's passivity and Johnson being a non-shooter hamstrings us, and sliding him to the point allows us to bring Miller into the starting lineup. It also means we'd have the ball in the hands of a solid free throw shooter down the stretch, which lately has really been a doozy
Am I crazy on this one?

I’ll disagree, I’d prefer him coming off of screens to be an immediate shooting threat. Ideally he’s not going to shoot it off one pass, but just having him come up off a down screen from the corner to initiate some off ball motion in the offense will open the floor up a lot more because the D will have to respect his shooting abilities. If I were the coach and looking to make a change at PG I’d slide Javon over to the point and plug Miller at the 3. Javons actually a pretty decent passer and average ball handler. Led the team in assists last year with pretty much the exact same roster. Much more of a threat to score over XJ/Hartwell. But it is a tough hypothetical “what if”.
Yeah it’s a really tough call, and I don’t think XJ at the starting point is necessarily broken/what’s wrong, I think he brings a lot to the table. Just have to find a way to get Miller in the starting rotation while not missing out on everything Kolek/Javon bring to the table. Tough to do because their skill sets are all so wildly different. You’d have to be confident that Javon is going to be your initiator in the half-court for it to work, I think.
So, I can't be the only one curious about the idea of Kolek starting at point.

Ok well check Twitter because the beat writer said grades. So did their version of by GeorgeThe byline of the link that I provided indicates it was written by the Dayton Flyers' beat writer for the Dayton Daily News.

I completely understand where you and t black are coming from. I would argue that kolek is better suited as an off guard that is a point guard as well.Love this discussion but I don't think I agree with moving Kolek to the point.
The way I see it, the ballscreen motion offense needs guards to be good at attacking downhill off of ballscreens in order to be effective. We have not had this for various reasons - XJ doesn't have a jumper to fear so defenders can sag, Jamal struggles with physicality, no one is hitting deep balls to stretch the defense, etc - so our problems on offense start at the point of attack. We've all seen dozens of ballscreens per game, and sometimes more than one per possession, where the screen fails, the ballhandler goes nowhere, and the ball swings around the perimeter harmlessly. This is the fundamental problem, it's why buckets always feel difficult, and I don't think moving Kolek to the point changes this.
I'd rather keep him primarily off-ball. Having a shooter that you need to stay out on is valuable in any offense, but opening up room for XJ and Jamal to create is desperately needed. Kolek is still a huge part of the offense but doing most of his damage coming off screens and curls. Not married to this take and maybe he'll be a fine PG but I don't quite see it yet.
Chris and Bryan join Sully on the Talking out LOWD podcast to preview the Dayton game. There’s a lot of venting about the state of the program, if you’re looking for a good vent sesh, give it a listen.
Disclaimer: we recorded it before the UmASS game.
