UVA beat Long Beach State on Friday night by a score of 87-52, and comes into this game with a 3-1 record, in which their only loss was to George Washington University on Monday night in DC. They have beaten Morgan State and Bradley (86-48 and 82-57 respectively).

Their roster is here: http://www.virginiasports.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/va-m-baskbl-mtt.html

Stats are here: http://www.virginiasports.com/sports/m-baskbl/stats/2015-2016/teamcume.html

Malcolm Brogdon is averaging 14.0 PPG/5.0 RPG, Anthony Gill is averaging 12.5 PPG/6.0 RPG. Mike Tobey is averaging 5.0 RPG.

I think this is their message boards, don't see anything about Mason as of when I started this post:

This is another message board I found:

This is going to be a tough game. I watched their game against Long Beach and they were fast, pushed the ball and solid on defense. I will be happy if we are competitive on this one. All gravy from here.

Unlike the other BCS schools we played in the tournament, Bennett won't be dumb enough to let us play to our strengths. He won't allow us to penetrate, he will deny passes into the post to Thompson, and they will defend the 3. This could be the toughest defensive matchup we face all year, and it unfortunately doesn't bode well that it comes so early in the season.

We might be struggle to score 45 points in this game, but the most important part is that the players get something out of it that they can apply to future games (especially in the A10).

I would have to agree- although is there something that we could do to change that dynamic up? If they come out to guard the 3 couldn't we get it to Thompson and he just drive up possible draw fouls on their bigs?

We don't need DP, just enough to get a kick out. Coach Paulsen is teaching the team that uva's defense is timing based also and there is a way to counter it. I think he has a history with Tony's dad or something. Maybe I dreamt that, but it sounds correct so I'll go with it.

Not saying we can beat them by any means, but I am very curious to see how we attack their defense. I will tell you this, Otis plays with more heart than Perrentes.

Anyone wanna take bets on whether the game announcers know anything about Mason's relationship with UVA? I'd guess there's a 2% chance someone does their homework...

Keep close, is all I ask.
And we should be thrilled about getting Ole Miss, OSU and UVA in this tournament. I realize we've had home-and-homes with Ole Miss and UVA in the past decade, but those are few and far between. So instead of playing Ole Miss, Towson and Bradley (the last two being easier to schedule), we get 3 BCS schools on a neutral floor.

You can get 3s all day against the Pack-Line D. Question is whether you can make enough to win.

Also curious to see how they play Shevon. They doubled Larsen from GW quite a bit and he carved them up to the tune of 6 assists.

Shevon is obviously not an adept passer yet, and is still learning how to feel the second defender coming from the weakside. If they don't double him, he might score 50 against Tobey.

Regardless, as Tom said, we are playing with every penny of the house's money at this point.

Mason coming off a twin peak high and UVA wanting revenge against schools named George. If we get a little high level game experience for the roster we'll be doing well.

Edited: For compliance with sports superstitions.

This is why Marko's three 3s were so huge. I think he surprised OSU a bit hitting those. And Grayer just going off from behind the arc. Can both of them repeat that performance? I don't know. In order to win this game they will.

I like Marko's savvy here to be the X factor (so long as he can limit his wtf moments).

Sagarin has UVa, at the moment #3 in the country off of their lopsided wins (despite the GW loss), as a 19-20 pt favorite.

No doubt it will be a very tough test for our guys. Growing up in Wisconsin, DP mentioned his admiration for Bennett's father who also coached a team to a Div 3 national championship. But it's one thing to know the other guy's system and another to get players to execute against it, especially a group of guys who are just getting to know each other.

Hoping along with others that it provides us to learn from the opportunity to go against one of the best fundamental teams in the country.

While we certainly have improved, looking at our 4 game stats, we still have more turnovers (and nearly twice as many as our opponents) than assists. And are still only shooting a little over 50% (vs opponents 70+%) from the foul line. We've been doing it with smoke and mirrors the last 2 games, I guess.

And we have to steel ourselves against the inevitable ups and downs we should expect from such an inexperienced group.

One thing I'll say is we saw a different kind of ball movement between Ole Miss and OSU. AgainsT Ole Miss we spaced the floor and used quick pass if to swing the ball side to side to get it inside. Against OSU we saw a lot more overlapping runs and cuts to the basket. He's actually gameplanning and paying attention to what the other team does!

Paulsen will have a plan at least.
