Why would be be fired? For his first 2 years he had more combined wins than any coach in GMU history over a 2 year period.

so tired of hearing this, take away the Preseason NIT and last year's CBI and it's a total BS argument. How about winning games that actually matter?

WHOA. Just heard the Women's A-10 tourney is in Richmond We can can still go to Richmond for a hoops tourney. It would be like old times!!!!

Why would be be fired? For his first 2 years he had more combined wins than any coach in GMU history over a 2 year period. His kids generally stay out of trouble, get good grades and he is leading us into a new, better conference. And he's so far won 80% of his games this year while missing several starters and dealing with a senior starter who may no longer be part of the program. Perhaps a few people on here get a little too passionate about this subject.

Dead on here. As much as I have disliked him from day one.....he's here till he really fouls up or we get a new AD. He's doing enough to JUST stay employed.

Wow, that's a really f**king high bar to clear, considering our AD.

Maybe Cabrera won't be so willing to put up with this BS.

What happens when you over-pay for mediocrity at a school like Mason when the AD panics.

The cost to kill the contract handicaps you if things don't work out.

Not at all. We're not North Carolina. Thus far Hewitt's probably only brought in one poor recruit (AO), and even he is a great athlete and solid kid. The PC is making more money, we're still getting invited to cool tournaments around the country and we win more than we lose. A dozen angry fans on a message board probably are not going to generate enough hate to put his job in jeopardy.

We win more than we lose?

We get invited to cool tournaments?

No offense, but if that's enough for you, you're a terrible fan.

Totally agree with 99 Pat. Its one road loss guys, and pretty much all of us penciled this one in as a loss in the first place. Iona is a tough team and tough place to play. This was the first real big road test we have had this year and some of our players had a bad day shooting. It happens, whatever. Sure, we could of played better but some guys had an off day and we had 2 starters out and one starter who is not really 100 percent so give these guys a break. The sky is not falling..... its one loss. Jesus. Get a grip people.

Not writing that as a fan, writing that like a boss would think, but thanks for keeping this a rationale discussion and not making judgments.

Build me your case for firing Hewitt. We haven't made the NCAA's or NIT in 2 years. We've had a few off-court issues with some players. We often don't appear ready to play at the start of a game? We don't beat bad teams by enough? He doesn't show enough fire.

There's good points on both sides, just don't see a real compelling case that he should be canned.

The fact that we lost has nothing to do with the frustration so many here are expressing.

Play hard, do your best and lose, and you'll get no complaints from me. It happens. I certainly don't expect to win them all.

Losing in that fashion is completely unacceptable and embarrasing.

Says the Mason grad who said he will root for us to lose every game we play this year in the A10. That's about as low as it gets in my book.

I also noticed you chose not to post one comment after our victory against UNI, but you couldn't wait to pounce today when the team plays like crap. At least your fellow dooms-dayers GSII and KA offer praise when it is warranted.

I've never considered Hewitt a great coach and I don't know if he is the answer here, but he's also not remotely as bad as you want to paint him out to be. Unlike our previous coach, Hewitt will justifiably take responsibility for today's loss; but anybody here with any basketball comprehension knows this game was lost in the first 10 minutes when we missed at least 7 wide-open layups.

I hope the team feels the pain from this loss and learns from it. I'm furious with the way we played today, but I'm also very happy to be 4-1 given the injuries and Copes suspension.

We all had very high expectations after the Final Four run. It did not work out as we hoped it would -- while we have had good years since then, we have not, and apparently will not, capitalize on that run as vcu has done since their Final Four run. They did very successfully what we thought we could do but failed to do. Simple as that. We are a solid team, but that's about it. Iona is no powerhouse. If this is an indication of how we will do this year, fans need to readjust their expectations.

First of all, I was out of town and not checking this site last weekend. Family commitments trump Mason hoops for me, sorry to say.

But hey, that UNI game isn't the first good performance we've had since Hewitt was hired. Just like at GT, his teams can bring it sometimes.

We're just not consistent at all, and we're not making any progress.

Now we have four seniors and four juniors, all of whom are in their third year of playing in Hewitt's system. And we're seeing the same stuff we saw in his first season, when everyone was so eager to give him time. The time for excuses is over.

I think he's a very good recruiter, but not even close to good enough to overcome his shortcomings as a coach. We'll need to have clearly better talent than the rest of the A-10 to win in this league, and that's not happening any time soon.

So the #10 vcu Rams got DESTROYED and Embarrassed by a non-ranked Florida State team. So the fact that they lost by such a great amount is embarrassing for them right..... oh god.... maybe they should fire their Coach because losing in that fashion is completely unacceptable. Give me a break, even the best teams in the nation are going to have times when they start off flat and have bad scoring days. This team right now will not blow anyone out.

I think all of our guys tried their best today and we messed up some easy opportunities. Decent teams will expose this, so after the way we started today I'm glad these guys FOUGHT hard and scored more points in the second half than Iona.

All we can do is root for this team through thick and thin. I promise, the sun will rise again tomorrow.

I completely agree, which is why I warned people to temper their expectations this year. When you return the same coaches and players from a mediocre team, there is a pretty good chance you are going to return a mediocre team. Everything we did very well against UNI was thrown out the window today.
Only if both your players and coaches are mediocre. Which I suppose they are. At this point I'd rather risk losing porter, mayimba and Lockett by firing Hewitt instead of risking their potential with a mediocre coach

1. Florida State is a gazillion times better than f**king Iona. But nice try.

2. If you think all our guys tried their best today, I must've been watching a different game than you. We were in slow motion the entire game. The only reason the margin was less than 20 at the end is because Iona took pity on us.

3. I sure hope the sun rises tomorrow. If not, we've got bigger problems than our shitty-a** basketball coach.

I wouldn't blame those kids if they're wondering just what the heck they've done, signing those LOIs.

Well, we'll see how many wins that translates to in a much higher quality conference. The CAA was total dogsh*t the last 2 years so to call those wins watered down would be an understatement. People are simply anticipating what will happen from the quality of play they have seen the past 2+ years. We're not winning 20 games in the A-10 playing at the level we have during that time period. He also has as veteran a team as you're going to get at a D-1 level.

If you're not embarrassed by seeing them get blown out by MAAC team then I would say you're either a total apologist or have a loser mentality. I don't think asking for 1 NCAA appearance in 4 years is unreasonable. My assumption is that if it doesn't happen this year, it's not happening next year either.

We were losing 34-5 to a MAAC team. And yet, some here seem to think I'm overreacting. Go figure.
