No one better be trying to use the social media excuse.

He kinda of mentioned that they were reading too much about how good they were supposed to be. Took that to mean they might have been reading too many headlines and they’re unfocused.

But he also made the comment that they read the bad things too, which I think is a cop out. If you’re going to be good, follow through and there’s no negative press ;) can’t whine about it when you don’t deliver.

Wow, IF that is true, this is feeling more and more like a virus coached season.

It is bad enough we have no real defense, no identity on offense and struggle to close out games. It is a good thing we can inbound the ball and usually call timeouts at reasonable times.

Tonight is proof that even a blind squirrel finds an acorn occasionally. We are downright bad. I need clarification. A friend of mine that I talked to at halftime said that Simpkins, in the pregame talk in the Gold Room said something to the effect that the fanbase need not worry, that we were going to be an excellent team. Any truth to this claim? If so, I would love to get my hands on whatever Simpkins is drinking or smoking.

He started with saying George Mason’s opponent tonight (and for the first 3 games)was George Mason. The team has gotten in its own way and directly referenced turnovers. He said if we had just five less turnovers in each game we could be 2-1.

Then he gave examples of bad starts or runs that ended in good seasons for several teams including the 2016-2017 Mason team.

As another person said it was actually refreshing that Simpkins tackled the elephant in the room. I thought it was a positive talk.

I agree about Otis, Kier, Grayer, AJ, Reuter probably being our best lineup but you have to hope for a few things. One, that Otis finds his outside shot because otherwise you have one shooter on the floor. Two, Reuter starts picking up his feet (he probably should lose about 20 pounds to be honest). Three, they give AJ some license to shoot at least a corner 3 (a, because we know he can hit it from there and, b, see the thing about having no shooters on the floor).

On the flip side, I think our rebounding would improve. I think AJ covers for a lot of mistakes. I think both Kier and Grayer can be above average perimeter defenders if they put their minds to it and are both good rebounders from their positions.

Big issues that need to be addressed are still the same, too many easy buckets and too many cheap turnovers.

Mar’s bread and butter last year was ok getting the ball under the basket, getting his man in the air, and finishing. His second best shot was the corner 3. I don’t think we’ve done a good job getting him the ball in the post where he likes it.

If he’s going to play with Reuter, his new bread and butter has to become the elbow jumper or the jumper from the FT line. He’s got to flash there. We’ve got to get it to him when he gets open. And he’s got to hit that shot.

Would also be nice to see Reuter pick and pop to receive the pass from Otis and hit the high-low to Mar or AJ. We primarily pick and roll and settle for the replacement pass to the slot. If you're seeing something different... please speak up. We rarely get a bucket from a cutter or a set play. We don't run plays from baseline out of bounds, at times it leads to turnovers. We've heard both that Paulsen is an offensive and defensive minded coach. Hoping we can identify one soon. AJ has to create or clean up for all his points, it would be awesome to see a play called for him above the rim.

Oh well, we won, squad up.

We aren't spreading the floor very well either. I saw a lot of four out sets today where the players were standing way too close together and making it easy on the defense.

And, yes, we aren't trying a whole lot of pick and pop. There isn't a whole lot of mid-range game going on at all. I thought Reuter was going to be the kind of skilled big where we'd be able to play that kind of game, but right now that's not happening. And I know the game has become pretty much go for a lay-up or a 3, but our 3 point shooting isn't exactly the best and so teams are just packing the paint against us and we've got to do something to extend the defense out and get some room underneath.

Why doesn't Paulsen play Boyd more. He is our best mid range player , but Paulsen keeps him outside the three line like a zombie. What gives?

I'm a huge fan of Ian as well. He only played 8 minutes. Scratching my head over that.

Just like Grayer only played 9 minutes one game, that is going to happen when you have more depth.

Like it or not, the Otis-Grayer-Kier trio is going to play the majority of our backcourt minutes unless they’re in foul trouble or one of the other guards outplays them in a particular game.

I know it is Dave’s preference, but with AJ’s breakout I don’t think a 4-out system necessarily fits our personnel that great.

While it’s difficult to scrap what you’ve been working on for months and put in something different during the season, a double-post offense would allow for us to play through Reuter on the low block and either AJ or Goanar in the high post.

Jarred is most effective when he can catch the ball 8 feet from the basket and make a move with minimal dribbles. He can also pass well out of the double, which should lead to open shots.

Since we are not looking at the screener at all in the high ball screen actions, it’s pretty much a waste of time and isn’t getting us any advantage. We have no pick and pop threat and the help-side defense is taking away the roll because they don’t have to respect our outside shooting.

As a bonus, we might be able to start getting Goanar the ball in positions where he can do something productive with it. The kid is averaging less than a point per game this season after averaging 11 as a freshman. Having him float around the 3-point line and not impacting the game is a waste of his ability, IMHO.

I agree, Jim. And since both Goanar and AJ can flash out and hit the corner 3 even if that isn't their primary shot, you can have them pop to the 3 point line in drive and kick situations to have a third shooter out there (and if they make a few, pull a defender out of the paint).

We could also really use Otis and Greene to find their outside shot this year. That would help tremendously. Also, JDS needs to find his way onto the court at some point.

At the very least, we actually saw AJ and Reuter on the floor together (immediately after AJ was caught out of position on a putback dunk). So maybe this will be evolving and we'll see some more double post in the next game.
