Sloppy ending but otherwise a pretty all around good win. Played in control up 8-12 points the entire game. Plenty to continue to improve on but you take it and move on.
AJ coming into his own is awesome, I hope he’s okay. Nice to see Otis back in the flow of things.
Reuter is awful and a liability at this point on the defensive end. For someone who was helping Calixte get better last year, it’s confusing to see him be bad.
Mar also doesn’t look right, but at the very least I saw him boxing out a bit on the boards and he had a good look down the lane that rolled away.

By far the best player today. Oddly enough, our biggest liabilities we thought were going to be our strengths this year — Otis, Grayer and Reuter are not cutting it right now and that is really holding this team back.
Grayer? He had 25 points the other night. I’ll take a liability like that every day.
He’s not doing the other stuff though. His defense is mediocre. He’s not boxing out. He’s not really trying to do anything offensively other than catch and shoot. He can score. But what he used to do in the effort side doesn’t seem to be there this year.
Sorry but he still doesn’t qualify as a liability on this team. We’ve got 99 problems but Grayer ain’t one.

Fun to see AJ do well against shitty teams (see last year's version vs CSUN) but if he's the answer at the five we are in deep trouble
Mar’s bread and butter last year was ok getting the ball under the basket, getting his man in the air, and finishing. His second best shot was the corner 3. I don’t think we’ve done a good job getting him the ball in the post where he likes it.
If he’s going to play with Reuter, his new bread and butter has to become the elbow jumper or the jumper from the FT line. He’s got to flash there. We’ve got to get it to him when he gets open. And he’s got to hit that shot.

Tonight is proof that even a blind squirrel finds an acorn occasionally. We are downright bad. I need clarification. A friend of mine that I talked to at halftime said that Simpkins, in the pregame talk in the Gold Room said something to the effect that the fanbase need not worry, that we were going to be an excellent team. Any truth to this claim? If so, I would love to get my hands on whatever Simpkins is drinking or smoking.

Not quite. He referenced bad starts for vcu 2011 and Syracuse last year and our 2016 slow start. Saying that it was still possible to get it together and go on a run. But yeah he’s smoking some good stuff
This was bad. We saw some better rotations at the 3-5, but did not have our best lineup on the floor in the second half. Otis kier grayer AJ and Reuter
The Reuter AJ combo worked well and imo is a must for us to be successful. That means gonar has to sit or move to the three. I’d like to see boyd first off the bench for the 3-4 slot.
As someone mentioned if AJ is our five going forward we’re going to have a long season. No reason why calixte and Reuter can’t rotate in and out all game and occasionally throw AJ at the 5 when the matchup is right.
Our defense just plain stinks. Until that’s fixed we won’t win comfortably. Otis has always been a liability on defense. It’s just been covered up by others. The fact that kier Grayer and Mar all seem to have weights on their ankles is weird. Even Javon is getting blown by. We’re slow at the 5 and that’s not going to change unless we dont play Reuter or calixte. Just have to scheme for that and figure we’ll give up a few buckets.
Grayer was 3-3 on his first attempts and the disappeared the rest of the game and then didn’t play down the stretch. I didn’t see him as a liability on defense I just don’t think he can get in a groove when he’s subbed out. Personally I think he needs to be on the court. He’s given this program a lot, he’s good, and I hate saying this but he’s a senior and deserves it at this point. No one is out playing him from what I can see.
Kier and Javon should swap and that’s it. I don’t like Javon coming in for grayer. It doesn’t add anything to the team. My take is whoever starts hitting threes should get more play.
Hartwell looks like he’s going to be good. If Otis keeps turning it over I’m ok will giving him a bit of playing time. Nice to have a solid player to give Otis a break.
My take on the lineup is this
Otis-kier-grayer-AJ-Reuter
Subs- Javon for kier and maybe grayer; Boyd for grayer/AJ; mar for AJ, possibly grayer; calixte for Reuter; hartwell for Otis. And then maybe get fancy moving AJ and mar around 3-5 depending on matchups.
