GIVING DAY 2023
First off-confession, I completely forgot about this game so I didn't watch the stream. In reading this, sounds like the stream and the game were pretty bad. I need to get these on my calendar so I don't miss them...

Jim-You are one of my favorite posters, but, we didn't buy this logic with Hewitt, why would we buy it for Paulsen. If one or two guys are shooting poorly, that is one thing. If the entire team is horrible, that is on the coach, whether he needs to double the number of free throws they practice or get a sports pyschologist.

If one or two guys are missing defensive assignments, that is one thing. If they all are, that is on the coach...

There is simply no comparison to the respective programs Hewitt and Paulsen inherited.

Hewitt took a top-35 program loaded with well-coached players and destroyed it within four years.

Paulsen is trying to rebuild it for the long term with 11 freshmen and sophomores.

Applying the same standard is like comparing apples and gorillas.

Paulsen's a good coach - he had Bucknell beating the big boys. He may just have to get more flexible at this level. Allow for transfers...let guys go for steals.

I'm hoping for a surprise 2-1 in Florida. We are basically at the same point we were last year going into the in season tournament, a bit depressed and wondering if we could get a D-1 win. GMU shocked us last year - perhaps they can do it again.

Attendance for the doubleheader tonight: 3,487

Geez - not good. It's clearer than ever that GMU is going to somehow have to become really good without fan support to ever get support. (if that makes any sense)

Jim-I am not down on Paulsen, but I think your response is not really addressing the point. It is not that I am saying Paulsen should be winning and going to the tourney in 3 years. We seem to be experiencing major team-wide problems that are coach-able items.

Missing assignments and a team as a whole that are shooting way less than their previous averages are coaching issues in my mind. Those are not recruiting issues where we are getting out gunned by better talent, our talent just doesn't seem to be performing up to it's potential, at least at this point in the season.

I am addressing the reality of the situation, which is that we have a team full of freshmen and sophomores.

In an ideal world, those kids would only have to play a handful of minutes while older teammates were on the bench.

Instead, they are having to start and play major minutes. Not surprisingly, inconsistent performance is the result.

As far as the missed FTs go, again, unless they just aren't practicing them enough -- and I highly doubt that is the case -- it's up to the players to step up and make them.

It's really not too much to expect from a group of D-I athletes to make more than 50 percent of their unguarded 15-foot shots.

Hey everyone. Thought I'd come back in a little more limited way to talk some basketball. My thoughts so far:

1) Everyone who thought we would be better after having lost Shevon Thompson was always deluding themselves. And another thing, underestimated the loss of Marko as well, who not only could hit that tailing three, but had court vision and allowed us to play the high-low game (which is something sorely lacking this year).

2) Just like last year, we won't know who this team is until they've played at least 10 games. A lot of new faces, plus both Moor e and Jenkins are adjusting to a different system. Everyone needs a little patience.

3) The freshmen look like freshmen. Kier and Tamara (and to a lesser extent Boyd) look like the only ones who might help this team at one point this season, but they will screw up a lot too.

4) Not sold on small ball plus Paulsen's conservative system. Only way a 4 guard lineup works in a half court system is if you can put 4 shooters on the floor at the same time. We don't have the shooters and Paulsen isn't going to try to press for turnovers and run. I'd rather see two forwards out there and a return to a high-low/pick and roll offense, even if Temara or Relvao aren't ready yet.

5) This loss today was all about becoming too easy to guard. All those offensive fouls were a result of a lack of confidence to shoot even when they were. You could see the hesitation and the. The inevitable desperate drives to the basket. The other team just packed it in and dared Mason to shoot over them. They went 2-9 from long distance.

6) I said at the end of last season that this team will go as far as their defense will take them. And they are marginally better on defense, but Otis is still limited. We are playing a lot of freshman. When the opposing team pulls Jenkins off the low block, there is no one to cover for him and that basically opens up huge driving lanes and so they are going to struggle if they can't keep opposing guards in front of them.

Jenkins was so afraid to foul at the end of that game, it basically cost us the win.

7) The sky is not falling. Calling for Paulsen's head is premature. If we are worse in game 29 than we were tonight, we will have a problem. But just like last year, I think we will see improvement.

8) Expect the exact same thing next year without Jenkins and Moore. And until we can find some consistent shooters, this team isn't going anywhere.

TBH.... I missed the game tonight but was shocked when we lost. Pretty unreal. Still in WTF mode.

Making me question our rotations and coaching.

I'm a fan of Paulsen's defensive system, but not really with four guards or a small lineup.

I've always believed in pressuring the ball and playing more full court with multiple guards. Turnovers equal more easy buckets as well, especially important if, I don't know, you cant shoot in the halfcourt.

Preferred Walk-On
That was a game we should have won.

I thought on the offense GMU played well enough to win - the team left a lot of points off the board due to missed FT's and several uncontested lay ups but with a little D this should have been a win.

The foul call on Otis on the 3 point shot looked like a flop from where I was - never saw any contact.

I did not understand the rotations especially when GMU was up then subbing in with just a 5 or 6 pt difference

Biggest issues I saw was the defense and how easily MSM guards were breaking it down and getting
in for easy shots/lay ups - this started early in the game.

The second issue looked like the Coach tried to fix the defense breakdown with bringing in different players. Not sure I can say I saw GMU try a different defensive scheme (please correct me if I'm wrong) and I was wondering as well why we did not at least go big for a few minutes.

Others have already said it - if GMU is going to a 4 guard line up - GMU needs to start mixing in some pressure - Defense was the big problem and seeing how the D broke down and the wide open lanes against MSM guards - can't imagine how it'll look against A-10 guards.

I'm hopeful like last year we will see some improvement over the next few weeks - something has to change on the D.

We don't need to keep subbing in the freshman! Ride our starters a little longer!

They let 15 seconds run off the clock before fouling the other team's best shooter. smh
agreed. and this was a coach's decision.

on the last play, were those our best 5 defenders on the floor? if not, then why aren't our best 5 out there? there are 3 seconds left so the likelihood we are going to set up a play on offense is zippy. at that point, play for double OT. you could hear the crown moan 3-4 seconds before that kid got into the paint.

curious to see what adjustments are for the games in FL
