Went to the game last minute with my oldest, some observations:

1) How that game was a sellout is beyond me. The place was maybe half full.

2) The way the game was called in the first half hurt us. Several times guys went hard to the hoop and got contact with no call. Dave was clearly yelling "2 fouls, 2 fouls!!" with a minute left in the first.

3) I think a lot of people could have predicted Otis would struggle today. They put Watanabe on him. Terrible matchup for him. Not going to work.

4) This is a game where not having a second competent big on offense hurts us. You could definitely bully this team down low, but we don't have the personnel to do that.

5) Not the team to go under screens against. If anything switch everything. There wasn't one guy on that team other than Watanabe that I would worry about getting by people off the dribble. Can't let that team come off screens with open looks.

Gotta remember the big picture. It would be a huge step forward to win 20 this year.

From the game article in the Washington Post:

"'We would like it to become a rivalry,' Mason Coach Dave Paulsen said. 'It’s not much of a rivalry right now in terms of the sense that we’ve got to win. We’ll start with one but hopefully more than that.'

The rivalry hasn’t taken hold among fans, either. Despite featuring teams separated by 20 miles, several sections in the second tier were mostly empty and attendance at the 4,300-seat arena was announced as 3,352."

A special rasberry for the students. I am not taking about those handful who attended, but for the rest of the student body, your support of the team is absolutely pathetic. You should be ashamed. As for the Athletic Department, like the prior regimes, your efforts to market this team locally has likewise been pathetic. While I am trashing the Athletic Department, in his 5 plus years at GW, I don't think PN has ever said a word to me, or even nodded in my direction. As much as I was ready for Kvantz to move on, he would always at least greet me and work the crowd.

The big man situation definitely concerns me. A lot of people on here hope Paulsen goes against what appears to be his philosophy and picks up a big man to replace Jenkins. (if a scholly hopefully opens up) Say he is our competent big man going forward. Still have only one unless Temera or Relvao see a ton of improvement next year. Tough to see at this point.

I have very little idea how GW values a ticket there at $30-$40. If you're in the first 8 rows of that "upper deck" or whatever you want to call it your view is gonna be obscured by anyone walking by, which is literally everyone because there's only one entrance/concession stand and the cheerleaders are constantly bouncing around. The high guard rail also took away a decent chunk of my view. All this coupled with them running around in banana suits make me question where the valuation of their ticket came from. I have severe gripes with EBA and I'd very much prefer to watch a game there.

We were sitting 2nd row in the upper deck and it was awful. Obstructed for most of the game. Can't see how that arena has a good seat for any type of game/show/event.

With tickets starting at $30 (then went down to $20 by Friday) and the game being on a Sunday afternoon in D.C., they were lucky to get what they did for game attendance.

Plus, no special deals from Mason AD. My bro called his season tix liaison at Mason and the liaison said, "30 bucks at the box office, $28 on StubHub." No deals, nothing!

Although, attendance might rock if both teams were playing for a share of first place. One day, perhaps!

Yep, we had the same experience today (and last year). Concessions are absolutely laughable (as are the lack of restroom facilities) and the lady at the downstairs concession stand felt bad for us and let us borrow a wicker basket to carry our items (literally). Blocking of the view by the railings and the crowd sucks and if you ask folks to please move, half of them don't understand you (if you haven't figured it out, GW is now pretty much 1) rich kids who want to party in D.C. and 2) foreign exchange students with parents who can pay the $60K price tag). My sister got into an argument with some Ukrainian girl who got all sh*tty when we asked if she could move down from the railing so we could please see the game. The GW dance team's routine on the concourse was a bit of a bright spot for the day...the young lady performing at our section had an incredible a$$ - with all respect to the Masonettes, GW's squad has quite a few hotties as well. GW band is OK as standard pep bands go, but is quantum light years behind the Green Machine.

Re: Sunday 2/26 Games

It's really easy to watch the GW Mason and tell which team is which!

How hard is it for GW to wear white uniforms at home or at least tell Mason that you're going to wear Grey and they should wear white or yellow(Does Mason have yellow unis?)

I noticed that right away at the game today and was surprised that they allowed this to happen. From a distance you almost couldn't tell the shades of the uniforms apart.

So I went to the game yesterday as many Mason fans did. Driving there and parking was no problem at all got to the "arena" (if you want to call it that, its more like a high school gym with a video board) at 1:00. I was picking my tickets up at will call because i paid the $30 through the Mason ticket office. I was excited at the prospect of sitting near the Mason bench. I got my tickets and first thing i noticed was the $25 price on the ticket. that didnt make sense to me. the second thing i noticed was the section and row. I told my wife its gonna be a long walk up. I was 3 rows from the top of the section. This was extremely disappointing. The site lines were awful, as mentioned in a few posts, we couldnt see the entire floor and thanks to the 50 person / kid birthday party in front of us there were parents and kids standing pretty much the entire game so i was constantly moving around in my seat trying to see the action. If i ever go back to GW I will buy my own tickets and have a much better seat where i can actually see the floor.

As for the game itself. This was the best game i have seen Boyd play. Otis seems tired, burned out maybe, im not sure. After he got the ball stolen back from him I watched DP scold him when he got to the bench, ive never seen DP in Otis' face like that. Since DP plays such a short bench i can see where these kids are getting tired but they need to dig deep and finish these last two games strong before the tourney. i think everyone here would have taken a 9-9 (assuming we beat Duqusne and lose to vcu) at the start of the season. I know i will be happy.

They killed us in the paint in Fairfax, so I'm sure Dave picked his poison and decided it was better to make them beat us with jump shots.

I thought our guys did a decent job of contesting most of them, but have to tip the cap to GW. They shot the ball better than they have all season.

As for bullying them in the paint, we did just that with the dribble drive. Moore, Boyd and Grayer got whatever they wanted going to the rim, a big reason why we shot almost 60 percent on FGs. GW had no answer whatsoever (other than to foul and hope it didn't get called) for our guards.

For perspective, GW got all but 6 of its 83 points yesterday from 3 seniors, 2 juniors and a sophomore.

Even with our No. 2 scorer on the season held to one basket, we got 41 of our 74 points from freshmen and sophomores.

Our seniors are fantastic and we will miss them, but not having a junior class really hurts against the better teams. Thanks Hewitt!

We're getting there and our staff is doing what it can while it builds a balanced roster full of A-10 caliber players, but GW is just a bad matchup for us ... at least until next season.

For what its worth- I think GW did something where they required anyone who was purchasing for Dayton, Mason and vcu to purchase a 3 game plan. My suspicion is they held back tickets and probably only gave Mason a small allotment (much like vcu gives) at a premium price. I've only gone with friends and sat on the side, but sitting all the way up top seems pretty lame for school provided seats at that price.

Why is it lame? We should put oppossing teams' fans as far away from the court as possible too. But no, we let them into our Gold Room.

It's just not a good setup. Feels like a collesieum where you have to look down into a pit. I'm pretty tall so I can't imagine how bad shorter people/people closer to that railing had it. For that price I'm not sure I'd go back. Would much prefer to go to vcu or Richmond.

The price is lame, thats fine if they want to put opposing fans in the nosebleeds. But to charge $30 (more than face) AND do that, is lame.

Although of course I probably would be endorsing it if Mason did that, LOL:chuckle:

Before this year I didn't really give a shit about this rivalry because I thought it was just a marketing thing. But after watching Wantanabe and Cavanaugh play like massive pussies twice I can safely say I hate that team. Cavanaugh goes down like he's been shot. And talk about pussy moves, Wantanabe majors in Japanese? f*ck outta here.

To me, hate/despise/abhor is reserved for vcu. Nothing will ever top that.

I believe the teams are (or should be) in communication with each other regarding uniform color. Like, how we wore green against URI and they wore white. Unfortunately, last year we wore green at home and Davidson wore their dark gray. In person it's not a big deal, but on TV it sucks. Light gray (Georgetown) is fine, but I'm surprised dark gray is allowed at home.

vcu's fans annoy me far worse than GW's, but GW's players piss me off a lot more. I've never watched Allie-Cox or Tillman flop around like they've been shot or give some over the top fist pump for hitting a wide open three with a ton of time remaining. Wantanabe is a douche.
