GIVING DAY 2023
I expected the turn out to be a little larger than 3,423 last night with class being back in session, all the promotions that were being run, and the team being hot right now atop the conference. I thought we might hit 5K this game. I guess GW brought the extra thousand people to the last game.
3400+ for a weeknight in January considering where we have been, is actually pretty good. I'm hoping for around 7-8k for Homecoming assuming the bus keeps rolling.

Not sure who else noticed, but most games Zach, KD and sometimes BO stay shooting at our basket right up until the clock reaches 0.00 during pregame warmups. Last night Loyola was already walking out to line up for the national anthem and a few of their guys started blocking Zack and KD's shots at the rim (similar to what NBA guys do when guys shoot after a whistle). Was slightly surprised it didn't start a fight, but KD especially cracked a smile that indicated he wouldn't forget what they did.

Made it that much sweeter to have him ice the game in OT.

Rock fight was an apt description. Once again, Billups muscled out key rebounds and completely shut down his man on D (except one play at end of reg when he let him get by him under the basket and made a dumber play by fouling him). I can't remember Mason ever having a player so impactful on D.

And credit KD. He played great D and took charge to win this game. I'm seeing a trend with him. He seems to get up for the tight moments at the end of games. Felling much better about him now than earlier in the season.

My biggest gripe was when Tony took Haynes out after his monster play and we completely lost momentum and the lead. I realize the guy needs rest, but when a team stays at 4-6 points behind you the whole game, sometimes you need to put a foot on their throat. That would have been the time.

Great win and coupled with the vcu loss the night before, made it a great 24 hrs.

Jalen was having obvious issues with his back - kept coming off for quick treatment from a back brace and to ride bike, and got back in as soon as he could

Wow. KD this, KD that. Really? If he was as good as you make out there would have been no overtime. No consistent defensive effort and not a point guard, dribbles too much without penetration or passing to a teammate. Reminds me of RP. Yes he benefited from teammates efforts in OT. Overall an anchor on the speedboat of GMU bball. Team foul shots continue to be a problem along with inaccurate passing. But 7-1 sitting atop the A-10 is nothing to sneeze at.
He won the game out of not rolling over and dying like so many others have in past. Zero reason to beat a dead horse on what team isn’t. That has been talked about endlessly. Sometimes just winning is better than trying to figure out someone’s stats or flaws. Hall was a talented player zero debate but they didn’t win when it counted. So there’s that! Need winners! I’ll take it

I rewatched the play, KD absolutely was the one to initially poke the ball out in the handoff. He also scored our only points in OT, in a game we couldn’t buy a free throw make. I get he’s a polarizing player but gotta give the guy his flowers when he almost single handedly delivers us a win we probably didn’t earn.

He also got a bad rap on air and from somewhere here about the backcourt play. He had no way of knowing if the ball was tipped into the backcourt by a teammate or a Loyola player threw it away, so he dove on the ground to secure the loose ball. To act like that decision was anything but a player hustling for his team is a really bad take.

I agree, the ball was off him, but the announcers kept saying otherwise. And they were closer to the action so I just assumed they were correct.

Yup. I was (and the announcers were) 100% wrong. One ref signaled that the ball was tipped by KD. He was aware and hustled. I apologize.

All good. At he end of the day when I see him or anyone diving on the floor and getting after it, thats a guy i want on my team. Even if he or any player can be frustrating or imperfect at times.

He can do some dumb stuff but he is pure f**king entertainment to watch. Can you imagine him in that vcu game in Richmond if it's a battle for first place and that place is sold out? He's either gonna drag us to the mountaintop or be the first player in NCAA history to be assessed six technical fouls in a game.

I could be ok with either outcome actually. Or the first NCAA Basketball player to get a penalty box introduced to games?
