Game 20: George Washington University, Wednesday, January 25th, 7 PM, ASN

Very very small sample size, but I thought Temara looked noticeably more calm and composed (and thus was more productive) once the game turned into garbage time. The outcome was decided at that point, the rest of the play was meaningless so he seemed to be more calm.

Maybe I'm wrong but I remember Temara looking more calm and scoring a few buckets a game right around the time of the tournament and the few games after. Maybe the higher intensity of A10 play is causing him to try to do too much. I actually thought his defense was decent against Cline on Sunday. Relvao is bordering on lost cause for me though. He had a year of getting adjusted to this in practice and he's no better than Troy.

Scholarships are for four years. If you were able to pull them, it would be an absolute disaster. What most coaches do/should do if they need a spot is tell the person they should not expect playing time, and discuss what is best for their future. Hopefully something like this will happen and we can pick up a transfer, because right now we cannot beat teams with length. This was very apparent in the vcu loss and the loss to GW. Either that or we need to become much more efficient at shooting 3's.

Scholarships are basically like 1 year contracts...after 1 year they "expire" and need to be signed again for the next year. Even the best of the best have to resign their scholarship papers each spring. And yes while it's vary rare.....unfortunately some scholarships are not renewed due to on the court/field performance.....see Alabama football etc.

I believe Relvao was injured/rehabbing most; if not all, of last year. I agree that he is struggling mightily, and I also agree that Temara has shown flashes on defense, but I believe Relvao only had a month or two head start on Temara. Regardless, I'm more convinced than ever that neither are in a position to take a starting role next year.

I believe some of that has to do with the fact that both players are really stretch 4s who are being asked to transition into the 5 position this year. Some of their play reminds me of Shevon Thompson early in his senior season when he was being doubled (like, huh? What am I supposed to do now?).

It's actually why I thought it was weird Paulsen went 4 guards instead of starting Temara or Relvao next to Jenkins. But I think he's playing the long game.

That makes a little more sense, although he just looks lost. Temara's problems to me look way more correctable. He's dropping passes and not being able to grab loose balls. Relvao just grabs a lawn chair and watches people go by him or fails to close them out.

That being said more than just Relvao are guilty of failure to get in the way of someone going to the basket. More than once against Richmond someone would get by their man to go to the hoop and whoever was help side underneath the basket would refuse to leave their man to obstruct the guy driving, fearing their guy would be wide open for a short pass and dunk. I'd way rather contest the layup and force them into the pass and finish though than just give the guy the lane.

I'm gonna have to disagree that the refs didn't impact the outcome.

At least 2 of Jalen's fouls, as usual, were total BS phantom calls. The only other thing he could've done to avoid the foul was to run away from the guy he was guarding.

We have one big who can play right now and he played only 18 minutes because of bad foul calls. It most definitely impacted the outcome of the game, especially against that team.

The refs had a tough night, but with the make of the roster - GMU is just up against it against teams with multiple bigs who can play.

I thought a questionable call occurred in the first half when Watanabe went up for and missed a dunk. Ref called a foul - but it was a delayed whistle. Can't remember who the guard was, but he made some contact with Watanabe before he left the ground. Didn't seem like he affected the dunk attempt at all though. I swear if the dunk had been made, no whistle would have been blown. Perhaps I just don't know the rule on that though.

After that another GW big definitely shuffled his feet before banking a 2 footer home. The TV guys even thought so.

There is talk of some conferences allowing schools to guarantee the 4 years (or 2 if JUCO) in addition to the "cost of attendance" stipends now available.

New breakdown is up. I figured out how to make gifs, so these should be a lot more fun and easy to digest:

Posting it in this thread because the film is all from the GW game (couldn't find a video replay of UMass). Check it out and let me know what you like and don't like. I'm having a lot of fun with these.

Why were we even switching on those screens? The GW players weren't using the screens very effectively and Otis had plenty of space to stay with his man (at least in the GIFS you provided).

I want a scouting report in AJ Wilson, please.

Also, what kind of work are our bigs doing (Temara and Relvao)?

I will continue to work on a scouting report for AJ Wilson but this is what I have so far after watching 2 practices -
- He is clearly very athletic on both offense and defense.
- He can protect the rim as a weakside defender but at this time is not big enough to guard centers (he may never get big enough to hang with A10 centers.)
- He is your prototypical power forward on D who can bail other defenders out and who is quick and long enough to guard both the 3 and 4 position. On offense, he can slash, will be a beast in transition and will be very active on the offensive glass with some length we don't currently have.
- I can't really speak on his jumpshot at this time but it seems pretty clear that he is working on it. The same goes for his post moves.
- He helps out with the scout team in practice and has not seen the floor too much since we have 6 current players who help with the scout team. Both practices I've seen have been day before a game, so a lot of scout team work and less individual drills.

The whole team breaks down into individual drills to start practice. Troy and Ralvao work on their post game and also their midrange game. I have only seen pretty basic drills as again, I've only seen game prep practices. Their defensive rotations seem to be a focus while they both are in. I can report back more on this later but I can confirm we most likely will not see any 2 big man lineup.

Thanks for asking!

Only posted one because I didn't want to be redundant, but the rest of the switches looked just like that. Totally unnecessary, and definitely a scheme thing. Don't really know why we would do that. We did help Otis by doubling the post, but sometimes the help was late, and other times it left shooters open. Willfully leaving a mismatch as glaring as Otis on Cavanaugh in the post is going to make your defense bend in ways you don't want it to.

GW was definitely keen to our perimeter rotation and took advantage a few different times. I don't know if GW takes the interim tag off Maurice Joseph but he seems like a pretty sharp x's + o's guy to me.

But is he as good as Abram?

GW looking good at URI on Cbssports tv (594 on FIOS, Ffx County). A 10.5 vegasinsider underdog and ahead by 4 at the half. URI's pg (Garrett?) still out with "stomach" issue, which was the case in their last game as well. Must be more than the stomach flu.

Matthews throws up a half-hearted 3 with GW not even bothering to foul on the last 30 seconds. URI thus wins by 12, covering the 10.5 spread! Post-game commentator notes that an apparently meaningless shot was important to those in Las Vegas
