Could we bottle up the 2nd half and play like that for an entire game? Starts like that against D-1 schools will be punished accordingly...

Yes, they need to make sure they don't come out as sluggish as they did the first half and play a complete game.

Thank goodness for a great 2nd half. My interest in this season would have taken a nosedive if we had a lousy 2nd half too.

I thought I was high when I looked at the halftime score. Then realized I was, but the score didn't change.

A win is a win. Didn't see it live, so can't say much about the game, but we should be blowing teams like LV out. At least we did in the second half.

It's amazing how important good defense is. In the first half, we gave up uncontested shots or committed stupid fouls to give them 17 free points. In the second half, we forced them into bad shots, grabbed the rebounds, pushed the ball and exerted our superior athletic ability.

I really hope these players realize they aren't good enough to mail it in on either side of the court, because they got schooled by a D3 school in the first 20 minutes. I am happy with the way they bounced back after intermission, and I especially want to point out the performance by Cam Murrell. He's proof that you can play yourself into the rotation, especially when others aren't stepping up.

I'm going to be honest, the most entertaining thing in this game is watching Temara try to stay seated. He stands up out of excitement within 2 seconds of the end of every time out, and is animated on the bench the whole time.

I'd be willing to bet he's got ADHD.
He's got videos on Twitter of him training to the Pokemon theme song. He seems to be wired a bit wrong, although in a good way. Sometimes you need a bit of a nutcase on the team. I also thought he played rather well. Probably the only freshman who did so.

Our energy was the difference in the halves. Otis needs to realize he's the team leader and what energy he brings will dictate the teams energy, especially with all the young guys. Every game is a learning lesson.

Coach Paulsen warned about inconsistency in Goff's preseason preview, so we better get used to it and just hope as the season progresses that they progress as well.

LVC had a couple of good players (Light #1 and Orr #22) but they were pretty gassed 10 minutes into the second half and we had a really good stretch of blocking shots and getting every defensive rebound. Our depth and athleticism really became a factor. Lots of fast breaks in the last 7 minutes or so.

No Abrams or Dixon. On the other hand, Temara rode the bench the whole first game while getting some time backing up Jenkins tonight. Relvao was the first big man sub off the bench but committed 2 fouls in about 20 seconds and was never seen again.

Many kudos to Jalen. He's got some really nice post moves and isn't getting too many traveling or foul calls. He's our go-to guy. Moore is still great on the drives but was limited by picking up fouls (at least one of which was questionable). Grayer was everywhere in the second half. And when was the last time Murrell was in double figures while playing a very good floor game?! Otis came alive in the second half as well, leading a number of breaks.

But we're gonna have to run to get much offense. We just don't shoot well from 3 (and not many guys offer much hope on this as yet) and teams that get downcourt and set up a zone will be very effective against us.

I don't understand these lineups at all

Like most coaches who have very young teams, I'd imagine DP is trying out different lineup combinations to see which guys play well together and which don't under game conditions.

Given that this particular group has now played a grand total of two games together, I'm sure that process will continue for a while.

Paulsen doesn't like playing uptempo but it seems to be this teams strength. I think it was last year as well to some extent, but we were able to get plenty of second chance points off missed jumpers because of Shevon so we didn't have to always push it.

Right now we just don't have penetration by working it inside. We seem to be best pushing it downcourt quickly and winning scrums in the paint and by scoring quick baseline cuts. Every time we work the shot clock it results in some garbage three point attempt. Otis running the baseline also seems to be working.

fantastic second half tonight. Was a little worried at the half but i knew our speed and skill would eventually show up and take over. Glad to see the guys work as a team the second half. D3 opponent or not, good to get that first win and hopefully gain some confidence.

On a personal note. Wife and I were the "move of the game". Third time in 3 years i have been selected. I feel special.

Looked like you all were the only two up there! They sent the Masonettes on a hike.

The difference in the two halves was that Dave tightened the rotation. Otis, Jalen, and Marquise played almost the entire second half. Boyd, Kier, Newman, and Temara all got significant minutes in the first half but played very little after intermission. I think it's pretty clear Dave planned to run the new guys for a while tonight, then backtracked after they sucked on both sides and losing became a real possibility. I would bet money he definitely didn't want Otis, Jalen, Marquise, and Jaire to play as much as they did with a game on Friday.

The positive (take this with a grain of salt since we played a D3 school):

- I think we found a viable five-man lineup that gelled nicely. Those five are Otis, Jaire, Jalen, Marquise, and... Kam. I think I was lower on Kam than anyone coming into the season, but he looks like a different player out there. His confidence on offense is a total 180 from last season. If he can hit threes and play solid defense, he's our fifth starter.

- Our core four (Otis, Jaire, Jalen, Marquise) took over in the second half. These guys have a ton of on-court chemistry. I think the process of blooding our younger guys needs to be rotating them through the lineup with three or four of these guys on the floor.

Negatives (these are very concerning since we played a D3 school):

- LVC sat in a 2-3 zone the entire game and we looked totally overmatched by it. This is due to the fact that we can't shoot and only one guard is a real threat to drive. The second half was fun to watch, but it's not a good sign that we needed to run uptempo to score points against a D3 defense. Better defenses are going to zone us all season long and if Kam is the only one hitting 3s it's going to be ugly.

- Our freshmen do not look ready to contribute. Kier, Newman, and Boyd all blew defensive assignments. Newman was 0-5 from three I think. Kier and Boyd are heady players but a couple drive attempts ended in charges, turnovers, or missed floaters. Most of those wide-open first half threes we gave up came with these guys on the floor. If they're doing that against this level of competition it won't get better against A-10 teams.

- Otis still lets himself get screened into oblivion when he's defending pick n' rolls. Happened several times in the first half (and all last season). He needs to figure out a better way to attack these because it's too easy to take him right out of the play. It's how #1 scored most of his points tonight.

Overall I'm glad we didn't lose, but games against D3 teams should be for tuning your halfcourt offense and halfcourt defense. It's very concerning we had to leverage our athleticism advantage to win this one, because we won't have that against most teams we play.

Side note - were those refs D3 as well? It was amateur hour out there.

Edit: realized I didn't finish a sentence.
