I mean, our excuse can’t be “they’re so bad they’re impossible to defend.” Paulsen is a good coach, but this is the one team he hasn’t cracked yet. We’ll get there. Sure, we have a lack of height but they aren’t bruisers by any stretch. They’re lanky as well. Like you said, not going to Kier every trip down was a bad call.

A 6-9 guard is a tough matchup when he’s hitting his shots. Unfortunately Watanabe always seems to play out of his mind against us. I thought Go could give him a hard time but that never materialized.

The comforting thing is that he, Zeigler and Steeves will all be gone next season.

At some point we have to break through and start beating those f*ckers.

Just got back from the game. My observations. Tonic is a nice bar with good food, a great place to pregame. The Smith Center is a dump. Attendance is worse than ours by far. Disappointed to see so few Mason fans there, we could have made it a home game. The concessions are an absolute joke. Their pep band? Don't know that you can call it that, so inferior to the Green Machine. We outclass them in every regard, except the product on the floor. 18 turnovers killed us as did lousy defense. Can't beat anyone when you allow 66% shooting in the first half. The lack of production from Otis didn't help. But, as many here predicted (including myself) Watanabe is a nightmare for Otis on the defensive end. Lots of growing to do. We are GW's bitch right now. It's a shame we play them for Homecoming.

Packed house at the Smith Center. Reminds me of many a day at EBA.

Just got home from DC. Clearly GW is in Otis' head. At times he looked scared and others just resigned that he wasn't going to be part of the game. And we didnt have an answer.

I give the guys credit, early it looked like they were going to get their doors blown off like Georgetown did tonight, but then made a run. Granted, they gave it right back. Even so, we had chances. But if Otis isn't playing well, we are going to struggle. We just dont have enough talent to overcome that right now.

To be fair there aren’t many Mason fans at Patriot Center either.

I looked at the box score from last season when GW comes to Fairfax, and Otis got 17 points in that game. Hopefully, that is what happens in a few weeks.

I am not a fan of that arena, the sightlines are poor and the design just plain sucks. The A-10 feed was lousy in the first half, and it got better in the 2nd half. There is no reason MASN couldn't have picked this game up. The A-10 seems to add more TV games yearly, yet, two schools that are 20 miles from each other can't get televised?

Made the trip to the game last night as well. A few thoughts:
  • Liked the fight we showed coming back. Not sure why we refused to attack the rim until we were down double digits. Kier and Boyd both did well attacking especially against Steeves. Best game Javon has had as well.
  • This would have been a nice game to have AJ's length. Not saying we win, but he definitely helps against a team like that.
  • Not sure why this annoyed me so much, but the GW cheerleaders purposely try to distract opposing free throw shooters by doing little skits or chants. Just seemed so classless especially compared to ours who move to the corners during free throws so they don't distract. I get they don't have a lot of fans, but that was embarrassing.
  • I don't understand the rule on the T as well. I guess it's that Otis broke the plane. Never seen that called before. Refs overall had a few head scratchers to me, but certainly weren't the difference.
  • While there were a lot of key plays in the game to me the biggest play of the game was after a Go 3, we played great D for about 28 seconds, then Otis gambled off his man leaving him wide open for a 3 in the corner that took the lead back to 11. We had a nice run going before that and it felt like a stop there would be a big momentum swing. DP definitely had a teaching moment with Otis as they went to the next timeout.
  • At least vcu lost.

“a lot of unforced, panic-induced turnovers,” Paulsen said

Isnt that a contradiction?

Not if you induce yourself to panic, which is what our guys do sometimes.

GW’s defense is porous and when we calmly attacked it we got whatever we wanted.

The T on Otis was essentially interference with the inbound. I was looking away when it happened, but based on what the announcers said Otis intercepted a pass from the original GW player, to another GW player who was still out of bounds and who was then going to inbound the ball.

Just like swatting the ball out of the hands of the inbounder, you can not interfere with the ball until it is "inbounded". Passing along the baseline to another out of bounds player is not yet inbounding the ball.

Should of screened sushi boy sooner in offense to free Otis up, and possibly leave him scrambling back. A nice hard Screen from Boyd would of gone a long way.
