Weekly rundown back up here. Comments should be fixed, as I think someone mentioned they tried but were having trouble.

Thoughts on GW in there but a couple more quick ones:

- GW murdered us last year with spacing and shooting, and getting Otis switched onto Yuta and Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh is gone and they're a pretty bad shooting team so the matchup isn't nearly as bad as it was last year. Yuta was a big part of holding Otis to a career worst two points at GW last year though.

- Patrick Steeves is the 50 year old at the YMCA who used to play D2. No athleticism, all fundamentals. Guessing Goanar guards him, which will be a really interesting matchup.

- Yuta, Bolden, and Toro can all be baited into taking bad 2s. I think the pack-line scheme should be effective against such a poor shooting team, but Yuta and Terry Nolan (very good freshman PG) get to the rim pretty well.

I'll be there as media tonight. Might be at tonic beforehand. Go Mason!

What worries me about Yuta Watanabe out front of the GW zone is that it's likely to disrupt Otis' 3 pt shots. He is so much taller than Otis, that I think it will be difficult to shoot over him. Seemed like in the past, we struggled to pass out front because of GW's height.

That said, GW's defense has nearly been as suspect as ours. Our offense has been in the 80s for our conference wins, so we can score. GW, on the other hand, hasn't scored more than 70 pts in any of their conference games.

Maybe we'll get them out of sync by playing a fast tempo like we did at UMass.

Need to get Calixte at the top of that zone setting screens and letting Otis shoot behind the screen. Also, we've put Kier at the point several times and let Otis float off the ball to get him better looks in the past. I could see Paulsen giving Kier that responsibility at points during the game if Otis is struggling to find his shot.

Agreed, Otis is going to need space if hes guarded by Watanabe. I think its safe to assume theyll try to screen him as much as they can. Also it'd be nice if they started trying to pound the paint with Calixte considering how well hes been doing, just so that they could potentially make GW have to start doubling.

Petey,

Your contributions both here and on giantkiller.co are of tremendous value to us all. Please keep up the great work!

My head says no way this isn't close but my feeling is they're due for a good one and we're due for a shit sandwich.

Wish that line would come down from five though.

GIVING DAY 2023
This feels like a little bit of a program statement game in the sense that Mason is 3-2 in conference, GW is 1-4, Mason hasn't beaten GW in 8 years and never at the Smith Center. Coming in and winning would really give us a sense that the team and program is turning its tide. If they play well and lose it wouldnt be as bad as completely laying an egg.

I try to not get too high or too low on one game, but I think this game result can really show whether or not this young team has matured this year. Its a huge opportunity.

Agreed - this is a game that I think will show a lot about the team's progress. To me it's more important the some of the "marquee" matchups this season because of that.

Unfortunately I share your feeling, which is weird because I'm pretty sure we're better than them.

"Better" just doesn't seem to matter much in the Bizarro World A-10 this year.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if we win.
