He had Copes at the FT line, which was a bad idea. Copes got his fourth and J2 came in and we were okay.
Kellogg came out of the zone when we went up 5.
It caused us problems but sometimes switching defenses does. I watched Hewitt on the clipboard and everything he di agrammed was standard stuff.
If I have issues with Hewitt its more doing nothing to take the ball out of Chaz's hands. Comical BA would let him roll the ball up for fear of Chaz going around him, when just letting him having the ball meant that was unavoidable anyway.
How bout not guarding the unbounded and doubling him. Anything creative? Course not.
Jim, you are right Marko should have been manning the high post given his passing ability and jumper (compared to j2and copes), but our guards did not help. They had a lengthy athletic fwd at the point of the 122 harassing our guards even pushing them well outside the key.Never should've come down to the end.
UMass goes to the 1-2-2 and instead of putting Marko or Jalen at the FT line, which is the softest spot in that defense, we had Copes and J2 there. Tactical blunder. If you put a shooter at the FT line, it opens up the entire defense.
Then we got lucky that Kellogg (for some reason) abandond the zone and let us build the lead again, so we draw up 3 consecutive horrrible inbounds plays.
And still we would've won, if only our senior guards wouldn't have melted down and given the game away.
Good effort, but bad coaching + bad playing in the clutch = gut-wrenching loss.
When we need one time, our SENIORS...SENIORS cant hit their free throws. Our SENIORS cant not turn the ball over by stepping on the line while inbounding. Our SENIORS cant get the ball down court for a last second shot without turning it over.
We just seemed like the zone baffled us. Like they never practice for it...which may be true.He had Copes at the FT line, which was a bad idea. Copes got his fourth and J2 came in and we were okay.

3 turnovers by our seniors in the last 26 secs with ZERO shots takenThis is the point Hughey/Quentin doesn't get. Of course we were in the game because of Sherrod and Allen, but they folded like a tent when it mattered most. In all my years of watching basketball, I can't recall a turnover from stepping on the line on an inbounds play. How does that even happen?
I've defended Sherrod more than anybody here, but he can't miss FTs and turn the ball over like he did in the last 40 seconds. And then wen we have a chance to salvage the win, Allen dribbles off his own foot and ensure we don't even get a shot off.
There is certainly enough blame to go around for this loss, but it would be nice to see our seniors grab the opportunity by the horns and close it out rather than throw it away.

I think Hewitt needs to draw up some inbound plays and practice them A LOT!!! Not just this game but all season have I've seen us use too many time outs bc we can't inbound the ball. And boy could we have used 1 or 2 timeouts tonight at the end. At least build in an option where you have a player step out to mid-court if nothing is open.
Its like the most demoralizing thing in the world, like Fight Club. You are just beating the shit out of a person, giving them haymakers all day.....you just pound on his face all day. After you have given it all you got, they get up and laugh................only because you found a way to slip on a banana peel and knock yourself out.
They scored 54 points in the paint, many on uncontested layups. Other than the first possession of the game, I don't believe we went zone.
Our senior guards in the clutch- ugh
Not sure how that foul on Wright at toward the end wasn't an intentional.
Was TOC there?
Was Cabrera there?
Nice to see there was a new pre-game video
Its better to lose by 9
I've defended Sherrod more than anybody here,.
OK, sure, but at what point in the season is the coach accountable for knowing that this is simply not going to happen? He needs to know his personnel, know their limitations, and pkan accordingly. And if he hadn't forced a drought by refusing to adjust to Kellog when Kellog easily adjusted to us, Sherrod and Bryon would not have been forced into a situation they have clearly proven they cannot handle. There is certainly enough blame to go around for this loss, but it would be nice to see our seniors grab the opportunity by the horns and close it out rather than throw it away.
