HISTORY vs. SAINT JOSEPH'S
Tuesday's game marks the fifth all-time meeting between George Mason and Saint Joseph's in men's basketball. The Hawks lead the series 4-0, and captured the only contest played in Philadelphia in 2015. The teams also met in the opening round of the 2002 NIT with the Hawks winning, 73-64, in Fairfax. In last season's meeting, Saint Joe's won, 87-73, inside EagleBank Arena. Marquise Moore (21 pts, 7 reb) and Otis Livingston II (14 pts, 4 ast) led the Patriots in the contest."

GIVING DAY 2023
Vegasinsider: Mason opened as a 5 pt underdog; now we're a 4 pt underdog.

I just don't see this line. If I had any money I would put a lot of it on Mason.

Apologies in advance if I jinxed us and SJU runs us out of the gym.

Edwards is not listed on the Kenpom roster of players for St. Joe's. Would seem to indicate that he hasn't been playing this year.

St. Joe's on offense:
- Doesn't take a lot of shots at the rim
- Doesn't take many threes (30.1% 3pr)
- Doesn't run in transition very much
- Is not a great shooting team
- But they get to the foul line a lot

Sound familiar? Offensively, St. Joe's is the team most similar to us that we've played all year, based on where they shoot from and how they generate points. Lots of jumpers inside the arc and lots of free throws. This probably changes a fair amount with Newkirk done for the season, but it still says a lot about where their strengths are and what they want to do.

I caught most of their game against Fordham and was impressed with Demery (F), who only has four games played this season. Markell Lodge is a nice player too - does most of his work in the paint, not much of a scorer but I'm worried he might be the random 4 that has a career game against us. With Newkirk out, Lodge has hit ten points each of the past two games, something he hadn't done all season.

On defense, St. Joe's is atrocious at defending the three. Their 45.1% opponent three-point rate is 11th in the nation, and opponents are hitting 38.5% against them. That's not something we're really built to take advantage of, and we didn't try to exploit awful perimeter defense against St. Bonaventure, so I don't think it'll have a huge impact on the game. They are better than we are at keeping opponents off the free-throw line - 14th in the country in opponent free throw rate.

They're kind of tough to scout since Newkirk was such a huge part of their identity. This game feels like one we need to win if we're going to finish top half.
