This game felt a lot like last year. The team plays hard and with good intensity, but ultimately lacks skill and was overmatched. We still can't shoot. Jalen was 9-11 and the rest of the team was 13-42. We were 4-22 from 3. We haven't figured out an offensive identity and couldn't generate points in crunch time. This is going to happen a lot if we maintain a four-guard lineup that can't hit outside shots.
Other thoughts:
- Otis took 11 shots and 9 of them were threes. Need more drives from him. Marquise can't be the only guard consistently getting in the paint.
- I don't really know what we were trying to do on offense. Occasionally we generated some nice backdoor cuts (I think Deandre, Kier, and Boyd scored all their points on backdoor dunks/layups) but outside of that ball movement was way too slow. A lot of swinging it around the perimeter and taking rushed shots at the end of the clock.
- Justin Kier was on the floor in crunch time over Deandre. Wasn't expecting to see that. I really liked what I saw from him - he was out of control a few times but he seems fearless. Paulsen had him cover Towson's leading scorer on a few late 2nd half possessions, which is interesting. He acquitted himself nicely.
- Ian Boyd is built like a linebacker. No idea if he's going to live up to expectations or not, but physically he is as promised.
- I think we had four guards on the floor the entire game. Relvao and Dixon only got minutes when Jalen was sitting if I'm remembering correctly. It's going to be a long season if we're running a four-guard lineup that can't shoot, can't generate halfcourt turnovers (only 3 steals), and can't generate fast break points.
The margin could have been a lot worse if Towson could hit 3s (only 3-15). Didn't feel like we were defending it particularly well. Overall, I'm tempering my expectations for this season and just looking forward to continued improvement.
