Game 1: Colgate University, Friday, Nov 13th, 7 PM, MASN

Free tuition may be pie in the sky, but can't blame today's college students for making tuition an issue. Reality is, many are leaving with crippling debt. Much more so than when I was in college in the '90's.

It really is a time for students to explore creative options; my neighbor's son is starting the NOVA transfer program now and can take his general education classes a short 5 minute drive to the Manassas campus. Will use the credits to transfer to Mason in a few years. With family support he shouldn't owe much at all. I was amazed at the young adults I worked with who took on loads of debt to go to some obscure private college after turning down full ride scholarships to places like UMass.

If it's an ape with a noose around its neck, it should at least raise alarms, warrant a discussion.

It is all about the context of the image and its usage.

So no, drawing an ape isn't automatically off the table.
So, if that was a noose, what about the noose around the banana. Was the person that drew it a racist against minions or something?

After seeing one of his peers forced out of his job over an incident that likely didn't even occur, I expect most university presidents will have knee jerk reactions.

I guess the question I would have is does every anonymous offensive isolated event like a cartoon drawing, and it was very offensive, deserve the attention of the university president?

When it is this? Yes, yes, and yes.

Many also expect "free" tuition, to graduate with a job making $100K and to go their entire lives without having somebody hurt their little feelings.

In other words, they're idiots. Why universities are giving in to their complaints/demands is beyond me.
College students think that graduating $27,000 in debt on average is ridiculous. It's actually a huge problem for the economy. Does that make me an idiot? Does wanting to work together to raise awareness about marginalized communities make me an idiot?
All I ask is to stop these blanket generalizations of the people that I work with. They have valuable things to say and they're just now getting their chance to say it. Thank you.

Talk to our president about that. He just instituted the policy that all freshman must live on campus. That will drive the cost of going to Mason up for many. I know I would not have been able to afford to go to Mason if I had been forced to pay for room and board as well as tuition.

Exactly. That's an example of Mason trying to make yet more money off students while the state contributes less and less of the budget each year.

If we are going to go after racism. Instead of going after vague cartoons that may or may not have been racist that we have no idea who even wrote it, why don't we get people that work for the university fired that post blatantly racist things like this on their twitter account:

"Minorities, college grads, dems & youth like us immigrants. Whites, less educated, reps & older folks, not so much..."

where is this drawing everyone is talking about? And don't rule out one Mr. Paul Hewitt for starting more dumpster fires on campus.

I should add that the Tweeter that made the accusation and posted it on Twitter has 17 posts accusing people of being racist... Seems to be a habit of hers.

Smart decision by him. I think I'd have wound up starting at a two year if costs were what they are today. Sure, some HS kids aren't going to make decisions that make sense financially. It's a shame that the typical middle class or lower kids choices about higher ed. are more limited today than the past. (Unless they are wiling to take on a ton of debt)

Yeah - that's shortsighted. I could see making that a rule for out of towners, but makes no sense for a kid from Fairfax.

There is an exemption for that:
The requirement will allow a handful of exemptions. The exemptions will be given in the following scenarios: if the student has a primary residence in a nearby Northern Virginia county (including Fairfax, Prince William, Alexandria, Arlington and parts of Loudoun county)

Nobody is arguing that the typical college graduate's debt load isn't ridiculous. But there is a lot of territory we can cover between "it's too expensive" and "it should be free."

The first is a point with which almost everyone can agree.

The second is an expression of entitlement from a generation of precious little snowflakes who seem to believe that someone else should be responsible for paying off debts they knowingly incurred.

Hell, I can't even afford to pay tuition for my own kids -- they're going to need loans -- much less pick up the tab for somebody else's.

As far as "marginalized communities" go, nobody has been more marginalized in the world of academia than the conservative white man.

So I should gladly fork over my hard-earned dollars to pay the tuition of some person I don't know, then sit by idly while being accused of racism, sexism, jingoism and every other damn "ism" anyone can think of?

No thanks.

And not to derail the thread too much, but I'm going to bring this back up on armed forces day so you can reiterate your position about political speech being injected into sporting events.

Speaking of which, did anyone notice whether the Patriot Dome did the usual salute to Veterans during Friday's game? While I did ingest a few beers during the game, I didn't notice the salute. It seemed odd, especially so close to Veteran's Day.

I don't recall that, either.

And the school obviously hates gays because they are giving away free Chick-Fil-A sandwiches. ;)
