I still dont understand these boards infatuation with Simpkins. Is it a gold room thing? Or is it just cuz he's not Paulsen?
Well anyone worth watching last couple years not named OTis has been on the team because of Dwayne. So for all you guys so impressed in what we have had you probably should like Dwayne. For those of us that can see we can’t game plan out of a wet paper bag but still like some parts of the team you should also like Dwayne. For those of us who enjoy someone’s personality when the rest of the program is a bit awkward or boring you should like Dwayne because he is one of the only people in our program that can carry on a conversation, look like they have played basketball before in their life and seem to know what they are doing. That’s why I like Dwayne

IMO, it's a little of A, little of B, and a little of C. C being people who watch games and social media see how he interacts with the players. When you see Duane pull a kid aside to coach him up on the bench, they listen. He engages with them on social media and seems to have a great working relationship with the players. I think every single one of those kids would run through a brick wall for Simp. Part of that is absolutely just the role of being an assistant, he doesn't always have to be the bad guy that the head coach sometimes does. But I think the other part is that the players genuinely respect him to a greater degree than they do other coaches on our staff. I'll leave it at this, I've never seen a single one of our players roll their eyes or shrug Simp off during a game, I can't say that about any other coach on the staff when they interact with the players.

All of that to say that even though I do love Duane and I think he's going to be a great head coach somewhere soon, I don't think it will or should be here. At the end of the day he's still cut from the Paulsen tree, and personally I'm not sure if that tree is a good one yet.

Do you think he's more influenced by Paulsen or by Wootten and Williams? MoJo talked about trying to emulate Izzo, his coach for his first two years of college.

What was Bryson's role on the bench last season? He was technically just an "interim" assistant last year.

he "seemed" to be very vocal on the defensive side of the ball. But I have no clue really what he did last year (him or Pete). He left a ton to be desired from his Gold Room speeches at least for me.

I would cut him a little bit of slack. He is just starting his career. Some people aren't natural public speakers. He'll have to learn this if he wants to head coach anywhere; it doesn't mean he can't coach one-on-one or even team-wide, though. But let's see how he grows into his role before we pass judgment on him as an assistant.

Simpk is not from the DP tree. Maybe a small branch. Like Gemni said, he's had legends plus Wes Miller in his bball life that I'm sure he's learned more from than DP has ever thought to think.

You are delusional. And hopeless. You make things up way too much. Never said that. Your husband has his hands full.

It's definitely a tough gig, because a vast majority of people in the Gold Room are stuffing their face, mingling and already buzzed by the time they start talking. Plus, the coaches have to know that somewhere out amongst the crowd looms a certain "mom" fan who struggles with boundaries in person and on Twitter.

One of my buddies thought it was cool that the coaches come in there to talk about the keys to winning (which it is), and I jokingly said, "Yeah, it's always insightful for them to show us everything on the white board that we won't be doing tonight."

LOL- During my one trip down this year, Coach Pete mentioned about how St Joes shoots a lot of threes and they need to cover the perimeter.

If I recall correctly, St Joes came out and hit like 3 of their first 5 threes uncontested.

Super fans love paulsen but a couple of former players do not. Our alum are a lot more qualified to recruit in this area than 75% of Paulsens total of assistant coaches during his time here. Shitty to hear they don’t have relationships with current staff
