Yeah, I caught it after the fact at https://www.radio.com/thefandc/listen. I was surprised by his using the Kier injury as an excuse for last season. But it was interesting to hear him talk about the recruiting timeline and such as affected by COVID.
you were seriously surprised he used Kier's injury as an excuse? He has been using the same excuses since his 3rd year. I need to listen because this proves exactly my point I was arguing. Dude created an entire game plan for a kid that was going to at least miss 10 games... then the kid comes back and promptly gets hurt again and misses the rest of the season and we stuck with the same gameplan all year that didn't work. And then he blames the season on Kier's injury?!?! this isn't throwing any red flags to anyone else?

Decent interview, Paulsen seems like a likable guy the more we get access to him. Interesting hear him talk recruiting and transfers. I agree with him that he’s got a solid recruiting pitch now, reigning POY comes from the A10, we have solid facilities, and we have 3/4 last most improved player of the years. That does have to paint an interesting picture to incoming guys who are hearing from P5s but look at the roster and see their ceiling a bit lower. The only part of a great recruiting pitch we are missing is a solid season, kids want to know they are going to be playing ball in March. Put that in there and I think we truly turn the corner in recruiting.

All that being said, hearing him talk about how he thought we were top 3 in the league and an NIT team and blaming the absolutely abysmal conference play on Kier infuriated me. I stand by what I said last season, I have serious questions about his ability to adapt game plans based on his personnel. He knew we had all those injuries going into conference play, but we got what we got. We should have adjusted the system rather than trying to jam the circle peg into the square hole.

This year is the show me year (for the third damn time) if we aren’t dancing and any of you still defend him I’m gonna jam a square peg in your circle holes. Here’s to hoping we’ve got college basketball this fall.

This is where Paulsen ^ digs his own grave with the fans, his exaggerations.

The Reuter overestimation was the huge damaging one, but there's no reason to think whatsoever we were a top 3 team A10 with Kier.

I mean, played Kier the whole game vs. 5th place Bonnie and lost by double digits at home.

I realize he has to talk up the program, though. And I do like where we're at with the program/recruiting.

That and "Judge us on two years". Now I cringe at the "Sleeping giant" quotes.

This makes sense. The Reuter bit ruffled a lot of people the wrong way, but it is what it is. But I certainly agree that recruiting wise, things have improved a lot

Top three is definitely over-egging the pudding there. We wouldn't have been bottom 4, but we weren't a top 4 team either.

As for the Bonnies, they had two unsolvable problems for us last year -- Osun and Lofton. Can't play AJ against Osun and expect not to get dominated on the glass (18 rebounds for Osun) and we had no one who can guard Lofton. It'll also be interesting to see if Lofton breaks down eventually. He played 40 minutes in both games against us last year, and has played almost 39 mpg all season (37.4 mpg his freshman year) -- that's way higher than what Otis played and we said he was overused (I also know Lofton is huge compared to Otis, so his body might have something to do with his ability to play almost every minute of every game).

Interesting changes - particularly the former GW coach. I am glad Duane Simpkins got a promotion. Would be interested in other thoughts.
I take pretty much everything DP says with a grain of salt at this point. I hope that we have a cohesive staff that can recruit and maximize talent. But, I'm not exactly on the DP fan bus. IMO player development has been poor under DP. He has been entirely to predictable and boring on all counts. I hope that some new blood means new ideas, strategies, and philosophies. Time will tell.

Would rather have almost any assistant in the league over Bryson Johnson. But then again what do I know
Stoked for Simpkins and mojo though

Would agree. Player development has been minimal. Recruiting has improved - but have to see what results occur on the court.

Johnson is young and just starting out so I'll give him a pass for now. I would like to have more experience on the bench.

Only at Mason can your players win 3 of your league’s last 4 Most Improved Player awards and have somebody claim that “player development has been minimal.”

SMDH

While your statement is true - that is three players. I think there have been greater expectations with Paulsen -- especially after Hewitt where we saw none. I would agree its better than it was under Hewitt - but that isn't saying much.

I am not saying it has been terrible - but we can do better.

I just hope we have a season this year. I can easily live without NFL, NBA, and NHL, but take away Mason B-ball and I'll be ready to unleash a can of whoop a**.

Well I do want basketball since we were robbed of the tourny -- but I also need football and NHL - not a big NBA fan.

When we have players that have higher ceilings than their hs days, there is some decent development. MM, Shevon come to mind. I expect similar with latest recruits.
