Going to the Box and 1 won the game today. Great coaching.
That was so weird - I was watching the game with my son, who is trying to learn a lot more about the game, and he was like "Is there a zone where you have like 2 on the baseline, 2 in the middle, and one up top" and I said "I'm pretty sure you're describing a Box and 1. That's generally considered a junk defense." One or two possessions later, Mason went to that defense and the commentators started talking about it, asking questions about "What would you do as the Billikens coach trying to go against a junk defense." It was bizarre. I can't recall ever seeing Mason play that defense and they did minutes, or even seconds, after he asked about it

They went to it against Morgan St. (even the triangle and 2 at one point I believe) and it was the difference in that game. I think they went to it briefly against UMASS as well with Kier guarding Pipkins.

Cool. Those must have been games we weren't able to watch

After the Florida game, Larranaga mentioned in the press conference that he'd considered using it against Florida because of their 3 pt shooters but didn't as they'd never played it all year and was afraid it would signal to the team a lack of confidence.

I thought this was another one of your Brad Edwards didn't want to meet with me articles that I have missed so much.

Challenge ... accepted! Be careful what you ask for.

Truth be told, I have no beef with Brad, and I, actually, think he has done a pretty decent job with what he had at his disposal. I disagreed with some of his early decisions (or lack thereof), but, overall, I have been impressed with how many things that have happened under his watch so far, some mentioned on here like the video board and lighting, but other things that don't seem to have gotten much, if any, mention on here. Have you noticed that there have been sponsorships for various aspects of the program (I'll have to dig through some emails to find the examples) and just this morning they sent out a note about free admittance to students to the women's game that was in the middle of the day today. Since some kids were home from school due to "snow", that was a nice marketing idea to make happen at the spur of the moment.

If Dave pans out (for the record, I still expect him to do so), Brad Edwards will have hit a grand slam home run.

Brian,

I think the guy is a really good coach who inherited a bad situation. Others obviously disagree. We’ll eventually find out who is right.
I agree with, and your judgment of coaches is likely far superior to mine. My only desire was to be able to discuss all aspects of Dave Paulsen in this thread, good, bad or indifferent. If I recall correctly, we were able to make constructive criticisms of the OCM up until the point he left and he became a martyr and then it had become he had never made a mistake.

You would think at this point that they would correct their atrocious starts. what a great way to take the wind out of their sails. You could tell they become disoriented, somewhat apathetic when they get down 16 - 4. Not sure what Paulson needs to do, but hey he is the coach. Cant he figure it out? Part of this is the same old complaint, no big man underneath. With the talent level being what it is they are probably doing the best they can. I think Reuters will help but he is only 6' 7" . Unless they can get a big man transfer I just don't believe next year will be much better. To me its all about recruiting. Come on Mason get your sh.... together, do what you have to do to get us a winning program.

What are everyone's thoughts on Paulsen after the Duquesne game?
Same thoughts as usual:
  • Young team makes mistakes
  • Shorthanded roster, especially with a player out sick
  • Team fights hard, but comes up short
  • Other team is bigger and has more experienced players
  • Team shows bursts of brilliance and fits of ugliness (inconsistency)
  • Individual players overplay their positions at times
  • Refs made a couple bad/no calls that need to be overcome
  • Coach Dave coached himself into a lather
  • Fans such as myself are tempered by practicality, objectivity, and
measured expectations and aren't going caca-coo-coo over a tough loss

What are your thoughts? (Awww, crap, I gave him an opening!)

Haha, you gave me the opening. Don't worry, I don't have too much to say.

Calixte is going to be one heck of a player. So it turns out Paulsen can recruit bigs. That's a positive. I'm not sure what happened to Marr though, At this point I rather see Boyd take the starting 4 spot as long as he doesn't jack up a three when he has a lane to the hoop open.

Mar scored 17 at GW, you know, on 5-7 shooting (include 3-5 on 3s, and is a freshman. The guy who killed us last night is a freshman and has been up and down this season, too, as is what happens to freshmen.

If I guess what happened to Mar is that he was moved off the 5 and that has hurt him offensively, because he's going up against players who are quicker than opposing 5s and are better able to guard him. He'll be fine.

Perhaps this would be an utter failure, but I would be interested in seeing what Mason's biggest lineup could do together.

Wilson
Mar
Calixte

I don't think Wilson or Mar are ever 3's.

Both of those guys are athletic 4's. MAYBE wilson is a bouncy, undersized 5 as an upperclassman that you could play the two of them together, but not now, and CERTAINLY not with Calexico.

I don't think that AJ at this point is trustworthy enough to be in the lineup at the same time as Calixte. Maybe by next year. Meanwhile you've put both Kier and Boyd on the bench who have shown that the ability to drive and finish.

i hear what your saying saying and actually agree. I know AJ wasn't available against GW, but I have a feeling next time we play them we are going to play big against them. Maybe not all three bigs, but maybe two at the same time.

It is pretty tough to have Steeves, Ziegler, and Watanabe on the floor all at the same time for us. I'm not sure how much having AJ, Mar, and Calixte guarding them will help on the offensive side of the floor, though, which is where we really got into trouble.

I don't have a problem with AJ and Calixte playing defense together, though, against GW.
