Who are the top 10 players at Mason in the modern era (since year 2000)?

And of those top 10, does anyone remember how much hype there was prior to them joining the team? Been a fan for over 20 years but I just don't remember the answer to the second question.

Would be interesting to see how much preseason hype actually translates to great players.

He obviously wasn't a top-10 player, but Copes was as hyped as any player I can remember and I've been following Mason basketball since the 80s.

Literally EVERYONE whiffed on that guy.

He was the capstone of the big man overhyped pyramid with Johnny Williams and Vlad Moldoveanu at the base.

Though to be fair, Vlad had a pretty darn good end to his college years a few miles up the road.

Holloway was pretty hyped, having been All MET and POY.

Makan Konate was an honorable mention McDonalds All American.

Darren Tarver was a pretty hyped juco.

Chank is spot on - I don't think any of the recent top players have been hyped at all, at least not any more so than Cam, Bryon Allen or Sherrod.

I've been trying really hard to ignore you, but had to correct one thing: Dave NEVER, EVER, EVER "raved" about Troy. In fact, if you read between the lines, he basically acknowledged that Dixon, Temara and Relvao were all projects the staff was hoping would develop.

The creator of the ridiculous Troy hype machine was me.

If that's the reason you are so determined to question our coach's talent evaluation skills, you can stop now.
can someone help me find the the 2016 a-10 media day video with Paulsen. I found 2015 and the 2017 video.

Dp said in that video Troy is one of our best players. I believe that's where the hype came from

Makan Konate was an honorable mention McDonalds All American.

I believe he was a nominee only, not honorable mention. Which means someone filled out a form and entered his name.

But you are correct that there was a fair amount of hype behind it as it was in his bio and nobody at the time really knew it was a big fat nothing burger.

Recent hyped recruits I can remember:

2006-2007

Louis Birdsong (Baltimore player of the year just like Will Thomas)

2007-2008

Vlad Moldeveanu
Isaiah Tate (only because of his DeMatha credentials)

2008-2009

Andre Cornelius (NC player of the year)
Kevin Foster (super athletic big)
Ryan Pearson

2009-2010

Johnny Williams (although everyone was more excited that he'd get his brother to come here)
Sherrod Wright

2010-2011

Bryon Allen (former WVU commit)
Jonathan Arledge

2011-2012

Erik Copes (highest rated recruit ever)

2012-2013

Patrick Holloway (All-Met POY)
Jalen Jenkins (4 star recruit for 24 hours before picking us)

2013-2014

NA as far as I can see...maybe Okoloji?

2014-2015

A lot of love for the recruits this time

Shevon Thompson
Eric Lockett
Trey Porter
Therence Mayimba

All hyped

2015-2016

Quite a few hyped in this class too, but they all bolted. I don't remember a whole lot of excitement for any of Paulsen's guys.

2016-2017

Troy Temara
AJ Wilson (3 star, interest from UMD)
Ian Boyd (NC POY, VA Tech football prospect)

This is all from memory and I could be wrong about some. A mixed bag of hits, role players, busts, and players who never played for us.

There was excitement for Marko after his first exhibition game because we thought he could ball handle and shoot. Also don't forget countless potential recruits Mason was in on over the years that never made it here.

For Paulsen's recruits specifically, there was some hype around Newman (Michigan state Mr Basketball) and Relvao (since he decommited from Valpo especially). Greene got hype for his 55 point game. Just a few in addition to the ones you mentioned.

Marko came closer to hitting Doc Nix than the rim on half of his 3’s

Copes had to be it this century.

Worst part is he lived up to a lot of it his first year. Made it worse.

Sherrod Wright was pretty close but I can't remember if that was after just him getting here or prior.

Not sure we'll ever get somebody as hyped as Nate Langley, though. Byron Tucker, too.

I admit it, I was wrong. I found the video. DP said Troy would back up Jenkins. DP was really high on the season because all his players were A10 Caliber, with no disrespect to his previous team.

http://www.atlantic10.com/mediaPortal/player.dbml?id=5698825
1:11:30 start of interview
1:15-19 start of freshmen segment-
1:17-00 Talked about depth and how every player is a-10 caliper and the previous season they didn't have that.

None the less my overall point still stands. We shouldn't make projections on a player until we actually see him play.

*caliber

An a-10 caliper is for the front end assembly of a Honda Accord.

No, fabricating comments the head coach made about a player most certainly does not prove your point that actual fans, as opposed to high-functioning mentally disabled trolls, shouldn’t get excited about incoming recruits that are highly ranked. That’s not how this works. It’s not how any of this works.

I would add Okologi to the list. I made the rookie mistake of reading too much into his highlight reel, which as we all know is fool's gold for any fan. The idea that a 6-8 player could shoot, rebound, dribble, etc., even led me to compare the style of his game (not his talent) to Kevin Durant. Yeah, um, didn't quite pan out that way.

Your danger lights should always be flashing with transfers, though I was surprised how Royal didn't produce much.

Reuters a pretty safe you know what you're getting one, though. Okoloji had warning signs all over the place.
