Vivature just gave Mason Athletics $210K. Brad Edwards posted a pic of him holding the fat check this morning.

Darrell..... you still here?

Green coached in the NFL Players Association Collegiate Bowl yesterday.

A couple interesting quotes "Green is happy mentoring athletes at George Mason while working with athletic director Brad Edwards"

“I didn’t get a degree there, but I feel like I went to school there. I felt like I was a student.”- I know I'm reading to much into this, but this is past tense.

He used to work out at Mason while as a player for the Redskins.

“Throughout my 20-year career with the Washington Redskins, Mason served as my primary home for offseason training. As a longtime advocate and developer of academic enrichment programs for disadvantaged youth throughout the country, as well as formerly serving as special assistant to the director of athletics at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, it gives me great pride to transition from longtime friend of this great university to family member within it.”

From what I have heard is that DG makes it much easier to get an audience with prospective donors. They will at least have a meeting with the AD just to meet DG if nothing else. So don't underestimate the power of a "Figurehead"

And as anyone in sales/fundraising/recruiting knows, just getting someone to let you in the door and let you make your pitch is the hardest part.

I agree with everything your saying. I'm surprised I have not heard of any big donations outside of the McKay family though.

I was talking about this with a friend who used to work in development at UVa. He said landing a major gift is a ridiculously long and time-consuming process that usually involves more than a year of wooing to turn a pledge into an actual donation.

Hopefully Darrell's name is at least getting Mason in the door with people capable of making a 6-figure donation. With the economy rolling, you'd like to think there are more of them out there than there were 5 years ago.

Yeah, and thank God for the McKay family and their donations! Without them G Mas wouldn’t have creepy t-shirt guy “lurking” around the floor during games shooting shirts to young boys.

George Mason's school adminstration did not capitalize on the '06 final four run and hired the coach who destroyed the program left by larranaga.

The program is still, for the most part, in ashes. It's unrealistic to expect any Darrel Green, Sonny Jurgensen or even Sammy Baugh to overcome those challenges.

If Dave Paulsen can get this program to win a consistent basis over the next 5 years with sone consecutive NIT or even NCAA apprearache then Brad Johnson and Darrel Green have market the success required to attract donors.

Not sure what an apprearache is but looking at the makeup of people I see at vcu games, it probably gets you REALLY high.

I am a vcu grad but my mother is a retired mason professor (1970 - 1992). I was going to Mason games when Carlos Yates roamed the court. I still have an strong affinity for local teams including mason, maryland and georgetown.

My daughter now goes to Mason. We need something to root for around other than Lake Braddock football.
