Countdown to the End of the Coach Hewitt Era

Your not going to get anything of substance from either of the guys in charge, nor should they. You say all the right things right up until the day you fire him....thats called professionalism.
You may have misinterpreted my post. I wasn't implying that they should tell us that he is going to be fired, but they also don't have make statements that lead us to believe they think all is rosy and act like getting whooped on national TV twice year is a good thing. Maybe I am being paranoid that they are going to keep him.

On the flip side, I don't recall either of them saying anything nice or supportive about Hewitt (do I recall that correctly). I believe in response to the questions about Hewitt, they have just said that they will, as with all sports, evaluate at the end of the year. So maybe that is really the response I am looking for in disguise.

That is university president/AD PC speak for, "Unless he wins the conference tournament championship and advances at least one game in the NCAAs, we are firing him as soon as the season is over."

What I mean is its leadership 101 to outwardly support the coach right up to time to make the move. You will never hear a quality AD/President come out 2 weeks prior to a firing and say anything negative outside of whats already been said about evals after the season. I'm with you though it would be nice to have a more secure feeling about whats going to happen next. I think Brads a stone cold killer type that is just holding his cards til its time to bring the hammer, dude wants to win....period.

I agree, but it should be noted that Brad Edwards does not have the "hammer" with respect to the men's basketball coach. I expect him to recommend that Hewitt be fired, but only President Cabrera can do so.

Why didnt OConnor see how bad Hewitt was. He could of asked 10 people in the industry and 8 of them would of given him luke warm reactions at the least. Why why why!?

Because of two things:

1) He was in a panic...and needed a "splashy name."

2) With that I am sure he thought Hewitt would have an edge on recruiting to run the CAA and get back to the NCAA on a semi regular basis.

You are absolutely correct that O'Conner needed a "splashy name." Our "beloved" coach had just left us and O'Conner figured the only way to keep the fan base from going crazy was to hire someone with a "name." The majority of our fan base doesn't know much so if he would have went with the smart hire (a good assistant or a quality coach from a lower conference) then most of them would have jumped ship immediately. Hewitt is a nice guy and someone who O'Connor knew the fans would like on a personal level, similar to OCM (although I think Hewitt is a lot more personable). It was a short term solution that has bit us in the butt, and most of us on here knew that would be the case. I still think it could have turned out better if Hewitt would have put together a better staff, but instead he has a bunch of "yes men"...

I''m even more pissed that TOC didn't hire a search firm. he put the hiring directly on his own shoulders and failed.

Me too. I would have much rather been sold on a diligent search thru of "rising" assistants and having them say hey we went with Hewitt, because XYZ....than ruling them out completely from the start.

Why? Because I bet a firm would have ruled out Hewitt pretty quick.....

I'm willing to bet ..new coach.

Me, too. Guys like Lockett, Mayimba, Jenkins and Royal don't want to sit out another year, so I'm pretty confident they will all return unless they take advantage of some NCAA loophole. I know some people have given up on Royal, but I really think he can be still be effective given the right coaching and system.

One thing that does give me a sliver of hope about the future was talking to Lamar Butler recently about Lockett and Mayimba. He had great things to say about both players, especially their desire to be great defensively.

With a new coach or a new school?

I get the sense that Lockett is a pretty upbeat guy. It may be a way of rallying his teammates after a stinker of a performance. While we like to read deeper meaning into it, it may be looking no further than the next game. Something like, "as bad as we played against Davidson, we'll be better against Richmond."
