Why would you wait to announce Hewitt is terminated? Because if he can't get his guy he'll retain Hewitt?

As to the first part of your post, I have no idea whether Edwards consulted with anyone. I've just been told that he has a verbal agreement in place with our next coach.
If that's accurate, and there will be an extremely short period between Hewitt's firing and the new coach's hiring, it makes perfect sense that Edwards is waiting until all the players are back on campus.
If he already knows who the next coach is, it's conceivable that he plans to meet with the team -- to let them know that Hewitt is gone and [insert name here] will be our next coach -- prior to holding a press conference.
Keeping the players in the loop before going public is the right way to play it, IMHO.
