All jokes aside, there is no reason not to have handed him his pink slip the day after the Fordham loss.

I'm not sure exactly how these deals work, but I would imagine there is a lot of negotiating back and forth in regard to his buyout. While they may have agreed that he is being terminated once he returned from New York , the lawyers probably still have to figure out over how many years to spread next year's salary.

One year for every letter of the word "sucked".

Yes, but if we expect our coach to not only get us to the tournament regularly, but also get out of the first weekend on occasion, their performance in single-elimination tournaments is pretty important, especially when they have been the higher seed.

That's the point. Coach L had a pretty good run at BGSU but never even made it to the championship game of the MAC tourney. He didn't even win the CAA tourney the year they went to the Final Four.

After six years at High Point, Cherry's overall record is almost identical to Coach L's first six at BGSU, and his conference record is much better.

Lastly, he did play for Dean Smith.

Lamar Butler is in rare form on Twitter tonight about the coaching and roster situation moving forward. I don't agree with everything he says about Hewitt, but I love his passion and bluntness regarding the players.

I like what he's saying about the players too. They need a motivator. Too bad Hewitt doesn't seem to be much of a motivator and can't X and O.

Obviously, nobody working for the school is going to openly criticize Hewitt. I sure hope the prevailing mindset at GMU isn't "it's the players."

You should be able to see his comments even if you don't follow him on Twitter, but he's a big proponent of player accountability in practice, games and especially on their own. I think he gives Hewitt too much of a pass after four years -- even I stopped doing that a year ago -- but his comments about the roster are still intriguing.

He mentioned how they have no shooters and how that falls on the players. Stated they needed to get in the gym and not just show up at practice and games. OK - but Hewitt's recruiting efforts certainly haven't addressed this issue. I don't think Lockett or Mayimba are known for their shooting.

The elephant in the room that Lamar never addresses: Who picked these players???Who had a reputation for roster mismanagement at GT??? He's way too much of an apologist.

That's the great thing about college sports: Even when "it's the players," the responsibility falls to the coach who recruits and signs them.

Hewitt put the roster together. Not a single one of our players was forced on him. It was his job to get the best out of them and he failed miserably, so now he gets fired. That's how it goes.

Was he talking about GMU specifically? And what the hell is tweeter?

Well, he should inform Lamar then, so he can stop tweeting a bunch of nonsense.

There was this exchange:

@Butler2two u have to admit tho changes need to be made - guys are regressing not progressing

@PhllyPhan all the new guys got better...wail til you see the 2 that didn't get to play this year.

I believe Lamar is delusional. He has to be the only one on the planet that does not see the pattern where the new guys always look good for a year under Hewitt, then regress.

Then there was this Tweet from Lamar regarding Hewitt coming back:

"@PhllyPhan let him get a year with the new guys. I don't see how the young players stay if they do let him go. Next year would he horrid"

I hope for the sake of Mason that Lamar has no influence with our AD (or hopes of ever being an AD). He would have us on the perpetual cycle of hoping the new guys can save us and worrying about losing some recruits/players. We'd never get rid of Hewitt following his logic.

"Next year would be horrid". What about the past two years? His first two years were duds too in terms of the team playing to it's potential. The quality of play dropped off immediately - it was so easy to see. Enter Hewitt, and GMU is turning the ball over 20 times a game and averaging 5 assists a game while failing to ever get big stops on defense.

We all know this - not sure why I'm rambling. It's a bit frustrating that a GMU great like Lamar can't see that or won't acknowledge it.

As far as a horrid season next year - yeah that will happen if a lot of guys depart. It's a chance GMU has to take for the long term health of the program.

Wow. Lamar is losing it. There must be a reason behind the blindness.

Lamar might have a point that this team is lazy outside of practice etc, but has thought about where it starts? Ie at the top. If OCM's guys couldnt do certain things, looked weak, slow etc, he would call em out. Thus, making them want to get better. I feel like Hewitt just makes suggestions and it doesnt resonate with players.

Its nuts what Butler is saying. Saying some of our guys arent a10 players???? was he asleep during vcu and daividsons transition years into a10? Lamar, Davidson is ranked #24 in first year in a10!! Hewiit couldnt coach All Americans and you think he can do miracles mext year with Mayimba? Wake up 22!!

Lamar has been nuts on twitter about this for a while. He seems like a apologist or is just not willing to give Hewitt his share of the blame. With what he achieved at Mason, it seems he has an elevated view of himself and what players should do. It's kind of delusional and annoying.
