There is no shortage of coaches fighting for the first item. I’d expect it to pass when it eventually gets voted on by the D-I Council. Already true of fall sports, and reality is the average college basketball team will be fortunate to get in 20 games between November and March.

Sources: Men’s basketball oversight committee set to meet today. Among the topics:

- Whether basketball players/winter sports should receive an additional season of competition.

- Whether to change parameters of 27-game limit. Right now have to play in an MTE to get to 27.

Also been told that the oversight committees do not appear to be quite ready to move on whether winter athletes should get an additional year. “It’s understood they will get some sort of relief, it’s just a matter of when and to what extent,” said one source on the call.

I was told that the majority of the coaches on the oversight committee’s call were in favor of going to a blanket 27-game schedule, but most others (commissioners and AD’s) were opposed to it and wanted to keep the MTE’s in the equation.

Sources: The Basketball Oversight Committees likely to recommend the D-1 Council vote next week on winter sports getting additional year.

Source: “It should pass based on precedence with fall sports.”

Sources: Conference-USA is considering a regular season scheduling model where teams would play the same opponent in the same location twice in the same week on Thursdays and Saturdays. Limited travel would help get more games in while dealing with COVID-19.

Sources: The CAA is considering playing regular season conference games on back-to-back days at the same location during the latter part of each week. This is in an effort to reduce travel and minimize risk due to COVID-19.

GIVING DAY 2023
I realize that it is D-3, but the NESCAC Conference (considered the premier athletic and academic conference in D-3 which includes Williams, Amherst, Middlebury, Bowdoin, et al.) just announced that it cancelled all winter season sports. It will be interesting to see what the Ivy League and Patriot League decide regarding winter sports.

These D3 athletes that pay some of their way to play at these schools deserve significant refunds.

No reason they can't play without fans and anyone that tells you they can't is either a liar, a coward, or completely misinformed.

In addition, you could easily make the case these kids are more susceptible to COVID without their time-consuming basketball routine.
