Because if it’s played in the Spring then you are either: Playing a minimum of 22 games in roughly 9 months - or - playing two shortened seasons.

The NFL plays about that many between preseason, regular season, playoffs (21) from August to Feb (7 months). It’s doable. If you have to start two to three weeks later, it’s not a huge deal as there is a big layoff between the end of the season and the bowl games.

I dont think football players are going to mind playing too much football. It's what they love to do. From an injury standpoint - the only really relevant factor is if you tear your ACL in the spring, you'll be sitting out the fall.

Yes, kids coming out of high school play fall ball for High School and spring ball for club. They're playing tons of games. Soccer, baseball, and basketball are essentially year around at the higher levels of youth too.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/29629669/power-5-talking-no-fall-football:

"Commissioners of the Power 5 conferences held an emergency meeting on Sunday, as there is growing concern among college athletics officials that the upcoming football season and other fall sports can't be played because of the coronavirus pandemic, sources told ESPN.

Several sources have indicated to ESPN that Big Ten presidents, following a meeting on Saturday, are ready to pull the plug on its fall sports season, and they wanted to gauge if commissioners and university presidents and chancellors from the other Power 5 conferences -- the ACC, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC -- will fall in line with them.

No major decisions were made on Sunday night, but multiple sources in several Power 5 conferences have told ESPN the commissioners talked about trying to collaborate if their respective presidents do decide to cancel or postpone fall sports.

Sources told ESPN that a vast majority of Big Ten presidents have indicated that they would vote to postpone football season, hopefully to the spring. A Big Ten official confirmed to ESPN that no official vote took place during Saturday's meeting."

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/08/08/athletes-coronavirus-heart-complications/:

"Jonathan Kim, a sports cardiologist at Emory University, called a recent study out of Germany published in the Journal of the American Medical Association particularly concerning. Researchers gave 100 patients who had recovered from covid-19, two-thirds of whom had suffered mild or no symptoms, cardiac MRI exams. The tests showed 78 percent had some kind of cardiac abnormality, and 60 percent showed inflammation consistent with myocarditis.

The study was composed of middle-aged people, and Emery said he would expect athletes as a group to fare better. But the results — that people with mild symptoms could suffer heart complications as a result of covid-19 — still startled him and his colleagues.

The findings were bad news for everyone in a general way and scary news for athletes in a specific way. An infection of the heart can cause myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. Myocarditis can lead to arrhythmia, cardiac arrest and death, especially in a person who doesn’t know they have it and performs rigorous exercise."

What about the Big 12? Sources told @Stadium, it would be “hypothetically hard but not impossible” for Big 12 to play if Big Ten, Pac-12 & others cancel fall seasons. Another Big 12 source: “It would be really hard given what ‘some’ of our medical directors are saying"

"ODU football season ticket holders will be contacted this week and asked to select one of three options: credit their ticket and seat membership payment to date toward the 2021 season, transfer their payment to date into a tax-deductible contribution to the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation or receive a refund.

Selig is encouraging ODU fans to turn their payments into donations, if they can afford to.

'We're asking those who can help us to please do so,' he said. 'Donations will be used to pay for scholarships for all of our athletes.

Our fans have been so generous and loyal to us through the years. But we need their help this year more than ever.'"

https://watchstadium.com/sources-mountain-west-cancels-fall-football-season-08-10-2020/:

"The Mountain West Conference has canceled its football season this fall because of player health and safety concerns regarding COVID-19, sources told Stadium.

In a vote of league presidents Monday, the Mountain West became the second Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conference to cancel all of its fall sports, sources said.

The Mountain West will consider playing football in the spring, sources said.

Earlier Monday, Stadium first reported that Old Dominion, a member of Conference USA, had canceled football and all of its fall sports. Saturday, the Mid-American Conference canceled all fall sports, including football. Last week, UConn, an independent, became the first FBS school to announce it would not play this fall.

With the cancellation of the football season for the 12-member Mountain West, a total of 26 FBS schools have now opted not to play this fall.

On Monday, there were multiple reports that the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences would cancel their fall football seasons on Tuesday.

As far as the Mountain West, last week, league presidents overwhelmingly wanted to continue with plans to play football this fall. However, those opinions flipped, sources said, with the increasing number of positive COVID-19 cases in the Mountain West footprint as well as the Mid-American’s decision to cancel its season."

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id...preliminary-talks-bubble-type-format-playoffs:

"Major League Baseball has had preliminary discussions about holding its postseason in a bubble-type format after the coronavirus outbreaks on the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins that wreaked havoc on the regular-season schedule illustrated how a similar scenario could upend the playoffs, sources familiar with the conversations told ESPN.

While a fully contained bubble similar to the NBA's setup at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida would be difficult for MLB to replicate, a multi-city format that replicates the NHL's Toronto and Edmonton hubs has gained early traction, sources said.

Because of MLB's expansion to 16 playoff teams, the league would need at least three hubs to complete its wild-card round before shrinking to a two-hub format for the division series. The league championship series and World Series could be held at one or two stadiums. Remaining in one metropolitan area would allow teams to avoid air travel and remain at perhaps a single hotel for the entire postseason, which is scheduled to begin Sept. 27.

Southern California, the greater Chicago area and the New York metropolitan area make the most sense because of the available stadiums, sources said. Concerns about weather in late September and deep into October make the Los Angeles area the most logical choice to host an entire postseason, though the sources cautioned that because of the nascent nature of discussions, no favorite has emerged."

https://www.dailynews.com/2020/08/1...pac-12-to-brink-of-canceling-football-season/:

"According to a report by radio personality Dan Patrick, the Big Ten presidents voted 12-2 on Sunday night to cancel the season, with the conference making a formal announcement on Tuesday.

Patrick reported that the Pac-12 was expected to do the same.

But hours later, multiple media outlets reported that no vote had taken place in the Big Ten — an indication of the highly fluid news cycle that has overtaken the sport in the past 48 hours.

Multiple Hotline sources said the Pac-12 presidents had not made a decision as of Monday morning and were not expected to vote until Tuesday at the earliest.

The Pac-12 presidents align more closely with the Big Ten than any other conference, in part because of the long association in the Rose Bowl.

If the Big Ten delays its announcement for a few days or weeks, the Pac-12 might follow — for a standoff has developed at the highest levels of college football power.

On one side: The Big Ten, which has been more hesitant to attempt to play than any other conference, and the Pac-12.

On the other side: The SEC and the ACC, which are not ready to call it quits.

The Big 12 is believed to be considering both options.

Regardless of the exact timing, an official decision by the Pac-12 to cancel is viewed as a foregone conclusion at this point.

University presidents and administrators are staring at the mountainous issues (logistical and moral) that would come with attempting to play an amateur, contact sport against the backdrop of a highly transmissible disease that carries worrisome long-term health implications.

Specifically, there is growing concern over the possible cardiovascular impact of Covid-19, following two German studies that revealed 'heart involvement in 78 patients' — out of 100 — 'and active cardiac inflammation in 60.'

However, a cancellation would carry massive economic consequences, as each athletic department generates in excess of $50 million from football — a substantial percentage of the annual total and the fiscal foundation for the conference’s highly-successful Olympic sports."

"Loudoun United, a second-division soccer club owned by D.C. United, will play next week’s home opener in front of spectators, becoming the first area team to do so during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Phase 3 of Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s reopening guidelines allows sports venues to operate at 50 percent occupancy or with 1,000 patrons, whichever figure is lower. Segra Field in Leesburg holds 5,000, so the state will allow up to 1,000 for the USL Championship match against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Aug. 19, provided the venue meets state requirements."

"Loudoun United will require all spectators to wear masks, except young children. 'If anyone gives us any trouble,' Zweifach said, 'they’ll be asked to leave.'

The largest block of tickets sold together is four, with exceptions for families. The team will block off seats to provide at least six feet of distance between individuals or groups.

Ticket holders will receive recommendations for timed entry into their seating section. While fans can leave anytime they want during the match, the team plans to implement a timed exit policy.

Fans will order concessions and merchandise ahead of time or via an app for pickup. No cash is allowed. The team will set up sanitizing stations. Picnic tables on the gravel grounds and seating areas in the tented suites are being removed.

Zweifach said the team has been working with the county’s economic development group to shape precautions and 'to handle this safely and smartly.'”
