"The novel coronavirus pandemic has postponed all Virginia high school sports until after Christmas, as the state athletic association voted Monday to schedule three condensed seasons starting Dec. 28.

Winter sports competitions will begin Dec. 28, and the postseason will end Feb. 20, followed by fall sports from Feb. 15 until May 1, and spring sports from April 12 until June 26.

This was one of three options the Virginia High School League discussed after its last meeting July 15. The other two options were to cancel all fall sports except golf and cross country or to swap the fall and spring sports seasons."

"The schedule from December to June is contingent on Virginia remaining in Phase 3 of its reopening. In Phase 3, high-risk sports such as football, basketball and lacrosse are not allowed. If the state advances in reopening, the season could start sooner; if the coronavirus crisis intensifies, the season could be delayed or canceled."

Positive coronavirus tests with the St. Louis Cardinals have postponed their game against the Milwaukee Brewers, a source tells ESPN, confirming the @jonheyman report. Unclear how many, but to this point positives had been limited to teams in the East. Now in the Central, too.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/30/sports/ncaabasketball/college-basketball-recruiting.html:

"In April, Jay Wright, the men’s basketball coach at Villanova, worried the coronavirus pandemic would hurt his ability to recruit players from next year’s high school class.

Because coaches could not watch players in person or have them visit their campuses that month, Wright was not sure how he and his staff would be able to properly evaluate the athletes.

'If it affects us and hurts us a little bit, so what?' Wright said in April. 'Suck it up. There’s a lot more important things going on in our world right now.'

Three months later, his fears seem almost quaint.

After two recent verbal commitments, Wright and his staff now have four rising seniors committed and thus the No. 1 recruiting class for 2021, according to the recruiting website 247Sports.com. They include players who could start in the future: point guard Angelo Brizzi of Virginia, shooting guard Jordan Longino of Pennsylvania, small forward Trey Patterson of New Jersey and the big man Nnanna Njoku of Delaware. Under Wright, Villanova has won two of the last four N.C.A.A. championships, and these players are eager to be a part of the growing tradition.

"Several other schools are also benefiting. Baylor, Butler, Ohio State, Southern California, Louisville, Michigan and Florida State each had three players committed for 2021 as of Wednesday.

'What’s really pushed up the whole recruiting process is the pandemic because kids are uncertain as to whether they’re ever going to be able to make paid visits to these schools, so they’ve had these virtual visits,' Tom Konchalski, a longtime recruiting expert, said in a phone interview. 'Obviously, that doesn’t give them as much of a feel for the team, the campus, the coach, the players and the whole culture of the school as if they took a visit when school was actually in session. But it’s better than nothing."

In letter to Big Ten ADs, commissioner Kevin Warren says “if we determine as a Conference it is not prudent to compete in the fall of 2020, we will not do so," @Dan_Hope reports. Also, Big Ten will decide “within next 5 days” if preseason camp begins next week as scheduled

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id...wn-players-do-better-job-managing-coronavirus:

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred told MLB Players Association executive director Tony Clark on Friday that if the sport doesn't do a better job of managing the coronavirus, it could shut down for the season, sources familiar with the conversation told ESPN.

The league and players recognize the coming days are a critical juncture following an outbreak among the Miami Marlins in which 18 players and two coaches have tested positive for COVID-19. Two positive tests by St. Louis Cardinals players on Friday exacerbated concerns inside the sport about the presence of the coronavirus and whether the jointly agreed-upon protocols are being followed properly to prevent outbreaks similar to Miami's.

Should another outbreak materialize, Manfred, who has the power to shut down the season, could move in that direction. Multiple players briefed on the call fear the season could be shut down as soon as Monday if positive tests jump or if players continue not to strictly abide by the league's protocols."

https://www.espn.com/college-footba...proves-10-game-conference-only-slate-football:

"The Pac-12 on Friday approved a 10-game, conference-only fall schedule for football to begin on Sept. 26, with 'a lot of built in flexibility,' the conference announced on Friday.

Each team will play five home and five road games, and the Pac-12 championship will now be played Dec. 18 or 19. The conference title game will be held in a home-hosted model for 2020, with the Pac-12 and partners Allegiant Stadium and the Raiders, Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority (LVCVA) and MGM Resorts International agreeing to begin hosting of the Championship Game at Allegiant Stadium in 2021 for its two-year run in Las Vegas."

"Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott conceded it 'may not be possible' to play even a 10-game schedule by Dec. 19 -- or the spring might be needed to finish it.

'The same thing may happen in other markets,' he said. '... We recognize that the best-laid plans may not come to fruition, whether being able to start on the 26th, play a complement of a minimum number of games we feel would be required for a College Football Playoff, and we may start but not be able to finish, and then we will have to adjust. We'll have to adjust with a spring piece, either to finish or to start, maybe delay dates for a playoff if it's still possible. There are many, many scenarios still on the table, but we felt it's critical at this point to be able to give some clarity in our plan.'

When asked on Friday what his confidence level in this season is, Scott answered, 'I don't know.' As Major League Baseball continues to struggle with schedule-halting outbreaks, Scott said he is expecting the same this fall in college football."

ASU starts its season against Arizona instead of ending the regular season with the Territorial Cup. Same with Oregon and Oregon State and the Civil War---no longer the last game on their schedules.

I love this. I hope other schools do this. It would be a shame if some of these historical rivalries don't get played. Iron Bowl in September would be awesome.
