Coaching Carousel 2025

Preferred Walk-On
Im gonna be honest, UMD is an absolute dumpster fire of an org. Per their number 1 insider on 247:

"The reason I thought Buzz was out is that several high-ranking program supporters advised them against it, and they felt confident it wouldn't be him.

But the decision-makers (Darryl Pines, Brian Ullman) and Colleen Sorem landed on Williams as their choice. It looks like they wanted him from the jump and never really considered anyone else."

So, now that our 2025 Coach-Poach-Watch has been resolved, why is everyone + TxA&M + UMd fan base not happy with Buzz? (Seriously.)

Like I said a few days back, this is a win for us. No such thing as bad publicity.

The UM flirtation (hopefully, it was more UM flirting with Tony than Tony flirting with UM) will only add to the perception of Tony nationally as a rising star. Rising stars can recruit better than unknown head coaches. It reduces the risk of coming to George Mason to play.

I think it was the best hire for them, he has multiple sweet 16's and an elite 8, almost always making the NCAA tournament at 3 different schools. Who out there that was gettable has a better resume?

I think it is a cycle too early for Simpkins and Tony - if either has continued success and a couple NCAAT appearances (and maybe for Simpkins if he takes a step up first), then they would be great candidates.

In the meantime - we should all root for Simpkins to succeed Buzz at MD.

Will Buzz play Mason?
I hope he will be interested.

There are some Maryland fans who felt that instead of going with the established power coach, that they should have looked at a different path like a Luke Murray or Tony Skinn.

However, its obvious that they had their guy from the onset, it just took a bit of time. Being local, I'm sure UMD wanted to also play some games with Mason too.

Agreed, instead of a recruit being concerned a coach may leave, maybe they will be excited about the possibility he is hired away to a power conference and would take them with him!

I'm with you. I do think that Simpkins needs to probably have a level of experience between the Pat League and the Big Ten before being seriously considered. Stranger things have happened though.

I do think that we just need to root for UMD and GTown to do well with their current coaches because they are the obvious threat to poaching Tony.

From what I could tell, it sounded like it was more UM flirting with Tony. I'll leave it at that.

OK, thanks. That's the UMd side. How 'bout for TxA&M?
