GIVING DAY 2023
WVU went far down the list before landing on Hodge.

Back to vcu . . . Does anyone think Jr. was in their top 3? Not a chance.
I'm not on the Trily Donovan Discord (he was blindsided) and there wasn't much out there on twitter, but it seemingly was a very hush hush search. I suspect Pitino was on the top of their list, but he may have been using them for leverage. Turner was probably on their list but they ran into the same situation we did in 2015, that he didnt' want to come back east (and his wife wouldn't allow it).

Other names that supposedly were on their list was Getter (who?) and Dwight Perry from Wofford. I always thought they were going to go Shaka tree with Mike Morrell. Shows how much I know. Here is a post that mentioned a few candidates: https://www.vcuramnation.com/threads/coaching-search-next-man-up.20871/post-1272409

I know a lot of folks who thought it was gonna be Turner, but they weren’t aware he doesn’t wear the pants in his family lol.

It’s looking more and more like Willard is heading to NOVA. Skinn will likely be on UMD’s short list, and most of the other coaches are already off the table.

I think they should go after Simpkins, but I’m getting anxious.

I can’t blame you for having the anxiety. Many of us feel it.

However, Mason took care of Tony so that’s a big piece.

Maryland has no ad right now. Who knows what they want. Williard also just called out resource issues. Why would Tony want to walk into that right now if he’s happy and satisfied?

I get it, and once they hire someone I’ll be much happier too. But we took care of Tony and that’s what matters most.

If the 1.8 is accurate that’s huge!

I’m getting the sense Mason is finally willing to do what it takes. But I’ll probably remain anxious until the UMD job is finalized.

1.8 is the number. It was either that or 1.7, but irregardless we are legitimately looking to pay for a coach.

And yep, until I see someone else sign it’ll be in the back of my mind too. However I will say nothing of concern has hit my phone at this point.

So where did we see Tony getting an increase?
It was hinted to in an early post by @Patriot8

Late to the party here. Am I just nervous thinking that Tony is much more likely than Simpkins or any other name if Willard leaves College Park?
welcome! Right now, while many of us are holding our breath, there is nothing to be concerned about at the moment. Tony’s extension was just announced. I suspect that Maryland will go higher than a Tony Skinn for men’s coach.

Porter Moser, Chris Collins, and Skinn will be on the short list

Washington Post gift article on Willard's consideration of the Villanova job and echos what Brian has been saying about the dilemma of having a big time football program to support when you are a basketball coach at the same school:

Tony might be on their list but they are not on his. He is committed to Mason for the next few years. Besides, why would he go to a school his boy is shitting on. And, UMD will low ball Tony and nickel and dime his efforts. The same way they have done to Willard.

Because he’ll be in the tournament every year, stay in the DMV, and—most importantly—make at least an extra million dollars.

Hate to break it to you, but that extension means nothing except Mason getting a bigger buyout when he leaves.

Both things can be true here. Yes, the extension can be nothing more than respect to Tony and making Mason invest in him at the appropriate levels. Also potentially more money / protection for Mason.

However, if you look at the UMD situation, why would anyone (especially Tony) go to a place

1) Without an AD (yes they are moving on it and have a guy supposedly they are hiring) formally in place
2) Go to a program that was just called out for resource issues specific to basketball
3) Tony is a Williard guy, and if Kevin just called out issues at UMD, why would Tony want to follow and take over for him?

That being said, Maryland is a top 20 job in all of college basketball. They will go get a big name to coach their program. At this point though, it doesn't look like Tony would be a match for them. Of course, I won't be happy until they hire someone else but everything folks in our community have been hearing is that Tony is not linked to the job other than UMD fans wanting him. Logic is there that Tony won't be involved in the job but of course that doesn't necessarily mean anything as I could be completely wrong.

No you couldn't! ;)
