GIVING DAY 2023
Non-power schools that figure out how to manage NIL will gain a huge advantage in recruiting, especially in the early years. I've posted this before, but I think there is a scenario where a kid may end up at a school like Liberty than a power school. Would you rather make $100K from a Lynchburg car dealership and play for Liberty or $20K from a Blacksburg, VA or Raleigh, NC dealership and play for VA Tech or NC State, respectfully?? That $80K might be difficult to turn down.
It will be an interesting business case study to follow.

Will be super interesting. All I know is McKay better get ready to open that purse up again or we may be cheering on Ted Britt 2's when the transition happens.

It’s interesting to think about, but I suspect that in most markets, the big Universities are going to carry more weight even if the university isn’t located there. I have no doubt that that would be true of Tech and UVA and Georgetown in Fairfax. Lynchburg might be different.

Hate to say it, but we are screwed most likely yet again being where we are.

It's all relative. Do you think we would be more screwed than say, GW? Davidson? St Bonnies? Any of the Philly schools? I agree that the P5s are still going to rule the roost, but I don't think that this will necessarily upset the balance within mid-majors.

I think markets like Olean that aren’t saturated by pro teams might have better luck.

I think for most, it is largely going to fall down to how well they can monetize their online presence and less to do with traditional endorsement deals and so where they go to school might not even matter that much.

You are the first and probably the last person that has ever said Olean has some sort of advantage in anything

Not saying they’d get a ton of money, but if you are talking about local business coming to players for endorsement deals, small college towns will be better for mid-majors than those who are in large media markets.

Unless uncle Johnnys diner is a front for the mob I’m not seeing a ton of businesses around that area that have 1/50th the money as Kathy McKay to even have one donor to that level. Unless Woj donates his entire salary

But why is Kathy McKay paying Jordan Miller for his likeness? How does he help sell cars?

The same reason any local business in Oleander would. You can’t have the argument both ways.

It isn’t both ways. DC market has Georgetown, UVA, Tech, Capitals, Nationals, Wizards, The football team, United, Mystics, Spirit (you may scoff but they have several USWNT players on that team), etc. for her to choose from. In a small college town, the connection to the one university there is much different.

Most likely what will happen is the vast majority will be trying to leverage their online “influencer” status to make money by posting about stuff. They will become content creators, much less likely that a Mason player becomes the face of a car dealership or restaurant or local sporting goods store.

Okay then olean has Syracuse and all of the NY sports teams...

Completely agree on your second point though. We are already seeing the early stages of it with these commitment videos and top 10,5,3 etc.

Syracuse is almost 200 miles from Olean. About the same distance as Pittsburgh. Buffalo is relatively close and I’m sure they get lumped into that market.

Olean is just one example. Plenty of places where there isn’t even a pro sport in the entire state.

Anyway, it brings up another interesting question: if McKay sponsors the entire team, like they do now, does the AD now have to revenue share with the players?

Get a better coach and on court results and money will be easier to raise.....

Guys, there are a handful of college players that will see “significant” dollars for access to their “endorsement”. Nobody that goes to Mason, even Otis at the height of his popularity, would command much more than a couple grand over the course of the year if they are lucky. You have to remember that their likeness doesn’t include school marks and IP. If McKay wanted AJ on a billboard, it’d have to be in a generic green and gold jersey. Also, thinking that a dealership in Lynchburg would spend 100k on a player at Liberty is the height of insanity. That dealership would be far better off spending that 100k on a comprehensive, dominating marketing presence across football and basketball.

IMO, former Mason players George Evans and Lamar Butler could possibly have received significant NIL compensation if this was available when they played. If Luke Hancock had stayed, he could have possibly been another player who benefited here.

Maybe not Jordan Miller. But it’s a different story id McKay recruits the next Michael Jordan and put the team back on the map.

I kinda agree with you, but I think you’re under selling the players a tad. I think even mid major players could easily make a thousand dollars an appearance. 10 appearances. 10 grand.
