Walk-On
George Mason Patriots (27%)

Bouncing back from a loss to vcu that ended their 11-game win streak, the Patriots got 25 points from Jalen Haynes to hold off Fordham on Wednesday and maintain some hope to make the tournament. The ESPN forecast gives them a 26% chance at that ... but only 9% conditional on not winning their conference. George Mason has won only twice against BPI top-100 foes (zero vs. the top 50) and it lacks any remaining résumé-boosting games left on its regular-season schedule. The Patriots will be a long shot to win over the selection committee if they don't take the A-10 tourney. (Updated Feb. 26 at 9:28 p.m.)
Next game: Saturday at Duquesne, 2 p.m. (ESPN+)

Walk-On
People on here are saying the NIT is joke which is mostly true and only followed by fans of the teams in it, but it's still a post season tournament we haven't participated in since 2009.

I was a student during the Paulsen years, so I've only ever seen us play in the CBI when we lost to Loyola MD. Obviously I'd prefer the NCAAT, but I'd still be ecstatic with an NIT bid.

NIT is cool if you can get a big name in Fairfax. I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think the financial incentives of the NIT have largely been canned.

I think they will get the NIT but highly doubt it will be a home game no matter what. With 10 auto bids to the power 5 schools I think they will almost surely all host. It’s a national tv game though and who knows on money part? It’s better than other tournaments where you actually lose money though.

George Mason
Profile Strengths: Competitive resume metrics, .500 record against top two quadrants.
Profile Weaknesses: Poor quality metrics, zero wins over at-large caliber-teams, one loss each in Q3 and Q4.
Looking Ahead: The Patriots swung and missed in their biggest game of the season, crumbling in the final 10 minutes at vcu over the weekend. For a profile devoid of headlining wins, that may have been a death blow to their at-large hopes, even factoring in a Wednesday win over lackluster Fordham. Only GMU’s mysteriously decent resume metrics have them on my board still, but this candidacy is probably cooked without any real chances to move the needle.

Meanwhile:
vcu
Profile Strengths: Strong overall record and road/neutral mark, above .500 against top two quadrants.
Profile Weaknesses: Almost no Q1 games at all, Q4 loss, iffy resume metrics.
Looking Ahead: What a massive week for the Rams. First, they used a late scoring explosion to bury A-10 title contender George Mason in a vintage game for the Siegel Center atmosphere. They followed that up with a comfortable victory at crosstown rival Richmond, avoiding a bad loss and retaining control of the inside track on the No. 1 seed in the A-10 Tournament. vcu now has a more pedestrian week: two Q3 games, one at home (Davidson on Friday) and one on the road (Duquesne next Tuesday). Nothing is certain, but if the Rams keep winning, they will have a real chance to dance despite a nearly empty Q1 record.

NIT is very likely this year and a very good chance to play a quality opponent on the road. There are a ton of teams with like 17 or 16 wins across the P4 that just won't be able to get in to the NCAA's. They will have first dibs based off their fanbases and all about viewership and attendance and the big one.... Money.

ACC is going to get a bunch of teams in the NIT (if they accept the invite) like - Wake Forest or SMU (one of these will be in the NCAA tournament), Pittsburgh, FSU, Stanford, UNC, etc. who are all below 20 wins total (except for SMU) and are on the bubble.

SEC is going to get probably 11-13 teams into the NCAA's and will leave 1-3 teams available for the NIT. Georgia is most likely out, Texas losing to Arkansas hurts their chances big time.

Big 12 and Big 10 have a bunch of teams on bubble and if they don't get pulled in they will be invited to go to the NIT. Thinking these 2 conferences is where they will pull from immensely to field the NIT.

A10 - If vcu wins it, I see us and Dayton going to the NIT. Maybe a third team but we will have low pecking order behind P4 teams..... do they pull in a Loyola Chicago (19-9) over a 16-13 Ohio State or 17-11 Indiana? Doubtful.

The acc is awful outside Duke! They however likely get 4 in tournament just because history but outside the top 3 they are very very bad. Unc is a weird team; watch teams like SMU and you’ll see that it’s just horrible basketball. Pittsburgh being 57 in the net is kind of a joke.

The sec is insanely loaded, big 12 is as well, the big 10 who knows they always tend to tank in march but they have good teams.

An ACC game outside the dean dome is definitely the most ideal. Sec at one point had every single team in the top 100. ACC schools are propped up by a horrible system this year.

Before the season, many of us thought a top-four finish would be considered a successful season. Now, with only three games left, we’re within reach of first place!

Whatever happens, this has been a great year—and basketball in Fairfax is fun again!

This is the type of spirit we should all have. :)

(We all can be miserable in the offseason and complain still, promise. lol)
