Pure speculation but either he has a certain "level" in mind or he wants to see who is loyal to him until the very end. I can't help but think waiting that long will help him but I don't know the space. Usually players like committing August through November of their senior year but maybe he will do the late commit season.

Pure speculation.

We got Sherrod Wright because he waited. I’m not sure if that was a good or bad decision for him. Looks like if it wasn’t us, he might have gone to Central Florida.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, signing late is perfectly fine and Sherrod is one of my all time favorite Mason players so that is exactly what came to mind.

I just dont know if the landscape has changed in that if a kid already has a ton of offers now but is taking 8 months to decide, if that makes it worse for him. I have no clue what Sherrod's specific situation was.

Purely spitballing off the top of my head. Either way, Fernandez will have plenty of options one way or another.

For a guy like Fernandez I think waiting makes sense. He has seen a massive rise in his stock in the last 6 weeks, and I'd guess he's betting it will continue to improve. Doesn't make it any less risky, but he is certainly betting on himself in a big way by waiting that long.

It could come back to bite him and he ends up playing in Fairfax and dominates...

My wife and I were at that game. Most explosive crowd reaction I ever got to be a part of!
My biggest crowd reaction was about 5 years ago when Jalen Jenkins gathered a rebound and hit a second chance shot to beat Davidson. We were sitting beside some really obnoxious Davidson fans.

No, not a bite, a blessing. For him and us.

Typically kids will wait to decide until the get an opportunity to camp at any number of schools. Lots of offers get handed out at camps because it's an easy, convenient way for coaches to actually see a kids skillset first hand and against competition the coach can control. Coaches simply cant make it to every school and see every kid first hand to see if their video is exaggerated, so they really rely on these camps for these 3- and low-4 star kids.

Also, lots of these kids don't have the means to really go anywhere, so they like the attention recruiting gives them. They get to bask in everyone's love... plus their allotted number of officials gives them free trips around the country. Hard for some kids to pass that kind of recognition and free travel up.

Barring any additional transfers, we'll have a grand total of one open scholarship.

I think CKE will be OK w/playing the waiting game to find the right guy while focusing on the '23 class.

There will be transfers every year. I’ve never been an advocate for oversigning like some coaches do, but I also don’t want to get caught short when the last 4 guys on the bench decide to leave for more playing time elsewhere. So this is the new reality.

I also wouldn't be surprised if players like Hartwell and Cooper decide to leave school even with an additional year of eligibility, given that Hartwell should graduate next year and Cooper already has. Cooper especially should be able to play overseas and start earning money. Hartwell may decide to transfer closer to home next year or also try to turn pro.

And, yeah, depending on how the year shakes out, guys like Gadsden, Frazier, Gray and/or XJ might decide to transfer out.

I'd be surprised if we had fewer than 3 open scholarships for '22.

I think all coaches should plan to have 4 open spots every year and make adjustments if it’s more or less than that.

Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised if the guys you mentioned get recruited over and decide to leave.

Godfrey SR was is a former Redskin. Interesting.

Dad is also a former Georgia Bulldog. If the kid grew up a Georgia fan, might be hard to pull him away from the SEC spotlight - even if it is Georgia. Hopefully the kid wants to pave his own way vs. go somewhere as a legacy.

Tom Crean is on the hot seat in Georgia. Might be part of the reason we got a visit. Or daddy wanted to say hello to some former Redskins and thus they made a trip out of it. Pure speculation. KE not in the pic is a bit odd.
