2020 Recruiting

So its DP's fault AJ gets burned on numerous pick n rolls? There was a brutal one at a home game last year. Ouch. AJ looked like a 6th grader.

Is it also DP's fault AJ jumps to block everything but mainly fouls?

I slam DP alot on recruiting but on AJ he isnt growing as a player. Maybe game hasnt slowed down yet for him.. He could be an asset if he was better on D. And he redshirted so one would think this is his year.

IMHO, I would say that it is on AJ and the staff. Each player needs to take personal responsibility to improve but it is the staff's job to help them improve and to put them in the right position to succeed. I don't think the staff has done that with AJ, or many of the players. Since DP took over, has there been any player who has really improved much since day 1? Justin Kier is the only one that really comes to mind..

Shevon, marquise are the other two obvious ones.

Boyd would have been another but his injury put a damper on that last year.

AJ looked good at the beginning of last year and then he hit the deck and wasn’t the same. Remember he did beat out Greg to start the year.

I also think we’re underrating Greg and ignoring his progress. I’m excited to see how he evolves this year.

And I meant athletes like AJ (jumpers, true athletes) not that Paulsen can’t coach in general. He can coach.

You mean he can’t stop AJ from taking himself out
Of position to go for an ill-advised block or trying to jump from the free throw line to throw down a dunk with a defender between himself and the basket?

Mike Moe had a similar problem, but he was 6’9 so his size allowed him to cheat a little while he figured it out. At 6’6, AJ needs to play perfect positioning on both sides of the floor. It was about Moe’s junior year once he learned to be more disciplined.

I wish AJ would be able to just play the 4, it it looks like he’ll be stuck as a backup 5 again. Maybe he will back up both the 4 and 5 and we can leave Oduro as a red-shirt?

I was speaking more about DP recruits but I will give you Marquise Moore. I like Greg but it is too early for me to say that he has shown much improvement, especially considering that his numbers dropped in every statistical category from his freshmen to sophomore year. Having said that, I am excited to see what he will bring this year.

To be fair to Calixte, he played 4 less mpg than last year and he barely played at the beginning of the season, through no fault of his own, against some of the lesser opponents where he might have gotten some padding to his stats.

His FG percentage is about what we’d want from a center (61%). His FT percentage is god awful and will have to significantly improve if he’s going to play more than 18 mpg.

I agree AJ looked really good right before he missed time with a concussion. Concussions can really derail a player’s season.

Geez. I did not intend to start the “let’s judge AJ” conversations. My only point was that we could try being on the positive side. Especially when it comes to recruiting. For instance, sleeperpick could’ve focused on the positive by pointing out that AJ could sell his buddy on playing for a coach that has twice coached the conference’s most improved player in just 4 years.

And who knows. Maybe AJ blows up and wins it next season!

Cincy, ODU, Charleston, URI, Houston....

Good to see. We have 2 possibly 3 slots for 2020?

I’d be happy signing 1 out of three with some P5 offers. The others with high/strong mid majors.

May not translate to the court but will improve our perception of swinging a bigger stick.

We need at least one big for 2020 (or one for 2020 and one for 2021) definitely. Calixte and AJ are rising juniors and will graduate after 2020-2021 (unless AJ grad transfers and leaves after this season). We will only have Oduro on the roster after that.

No -- generally we do not go after the same recruits. Look at 24/7 or ESPN their prospect list is a sea of 3 & 4 stars.

And yet, somehow, all but one of their incoming recruits is a 2 star player...huh. Imagine that.

But could more physically ready in a year or two. Whereas most of our 2 star guys need 2 years of Ciao hall or aren't getting any taller.

You mean like their first 2020 recruit to commit who is 5’11 and 150 pounds?

I get that we have wiffed on a lot of bigs, but let’s stop crapping in our team.
