GIVING DAY 2023
At this point I'm hoping for is close buy games. Wouldn't mind seeing us take games in Charlottesville or Blacksburg. Realistically I'd imagine we're going to take some Big 10/ Big 12 buy games in late December so we can be the tune up team before they go into conference play.

Tech hasn't played Mason in god knows how long, and I am not sure if either school would be willing to take Mason in a buy game this year. I wouldn't bet on it. The Big 10/12 buy game (s) is probably more likely.

I image we need the $$ from a buy game or two. And has been pointed out previously, taking one on the west coast while we are out there playing Fresno St makes a ton of sense.

Scheduling wise it doesn't seem feasible to take a West Coast buy anymore, early December looks as follows:

2 DEC: Navy @ Home
5 DEC: @ Fresno St
8 DEC: American @ Home

AD really shit the bed on this one, unless no California teams wanted to play/were available that week.

Have to think that they probably tried to fill a game while out west but the logistics just didnt allow it.

you give them far too much credit I think. this was almost too easy.. There are more than 20 teams out there that we could get a buy game with and they failed 20 times you think?

It could be more than that. Maybe they wanted to get back home to give time for study hours and practice before American. I don't know. Did all 20 of those teams want to play Mason though?

Obviously the logistics didn't work to their liking but I have to think they tried. If they didn't, they didn't. They don't have to run their decisions through us lol.

There are not 20 teams within a reasonable driving distance from Fresno that would have had the financials to pay another team to play them. You would also have to eliminate all of the MWC teams (which would eliminate the entire state of Nevada, San Jose, and San Diego, going to Arizona or Oregon or Idaho would require another plane flight. You looking at San Francisco or L.A. basically, and what are those 4 teams doing that week? The PAC 12 are going to a 20 conference game slate, so they have 3 less games to play with.

Now we could have signed a home-and-home with another school in San Francisco or L.A. -- Santa Clara, San Francisco, Pepperdine, Irvine, etc. But are they willing to fly out east in 2021-2022?

Agree there’s a lot of reasons why this probably happened, at the end of the day it’s just a missed opportunity.

who is driving anywhere when you are in Fresno.. San Fran and LA are like 4 hours away.. there are like 3 teams in driving distance if that is what you are trying to convey but they wouldn't be driving anyway...they would be chartering or flying commercial... Missed opportunity and I am not buying this lack of teams BS they probably didn't even think of it

Plenty of places on the way back in the middle of country to play a P5 pay for game. Heck alot of options even if it wasn't a pay game that would be better then AU.

I mean only one person disagrees with you and I disagree on the caveat we go undefeated in OOC lol.. so not much disagreement there

Y’all do realize we still have 5 OOC games left to announce, right?

BYU, Tulsa/BC, Fresno State and ODU is not a bad start by any means.

At JMU is a rivalry game and I’m glad we still play it, particularly because we own their asses.

Everyone pays cupcakes to go on the road and take a beating, and as long as Bryant, Navy and American comply, those games will have served their purpose.

Depending on the final 5 games, this could be a really good schedule. Why not wait and see what comes of it instead of complaining about something based on incomplete info?

I think it's if you combine Bryant, Navy, American, Maine, Fresno St (I don't know how good they'll be next year, but they weren't good this past season), and JMU that's a lot of bad teams on your schedule...

If the other five include: two buy games against at least one top 50 team, and two home-and-homes with upper tier mid-majors and I'll be happy.

Most good mid majors schedule 2-3 really bad teams. We currently have 5-6. Our coaching staff last year did 7-8 and were applauded for it. I hope I’m incorrect that they do the same thing again but there are patterns starting to build. I’m sure they will take a buy game to a mid tier power 6 team. I’m also sure that they schedule at least 2 more scrub teams. That’s not good enough considering our MWC cross game faces a bad MWC team that lost 4 starters. That’s not on Paulsen but they need to recoup a couple decent teams.
Home and home with a decent mid major would be great. Just haven’t seen him make that a priority so why would he start now.

you also shat on BC because Richmond beat them and complimented Nebraska when we beat them. BC should be absolute booty next year considering their losses and rebuild.

BYU is losing their 3 of their 4 top scorers from last season too. I think something like 5 of their top 8 scorers, so I doubt they'll be as good next season as they were last.

I don’t want to see BC, hoping we get Tulsa after we beat BYU

this is where my concern is. I don’t see any good games just a lot of meh games where the ratings are meh. Sure I want to play jmu and Odu but still, those aren’t the best rated games. When you fly out for Fresno state why not try to be economical and find a second game? Obviously for whatever reason they aren’t doing it.

It's probably less economical to have a long layover somewhere else to play a game than it would be to fly home and then fly out again (or pick up a game from the bajillion P5s on the east coast).

It's actually cheaper to fly back to Dulles from Fresno than it is SFO, if you can believe that. LAX would be ideal, since they actually have more direct flights that are cheap, but then you've have to get to LAX from Fresno.

Hopefully, we're talking to an L.A.-based school to give Hartwell a homecoming either next season or his last.

A little bit off topic, but U of R has a legit schedule next year.

@Kentucky, CSU, Vandy, Charleston

Home vs ODU, UNI

Plus whatever tournament and I’m sure 3-4 gimme games.

They are probably going to be a fringe top 25 team next year but realistically your SOS needs to be around top 5-6 in the A10 to be in the hunt for an at large.

I like their squad. Not that deep, but they have some serious competitors.
