I think it's because he's already a freshman on campus. He graduated in 2016.

I never heard of Walkons redshirting, I also never heard of a team taking 3 preferred walk ons before.

It is a common Verbal Commits error that they do for "transfers" and "walkons"

Well according to his twitter he is transferring from somewhere... which would explain the red-shirt. Hard to know twitter info when Pablo is not around.
