FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University men's basketball team will face an early non-conference test when the Patriots play at national championship contender Louisville on November 12.

The Patriots and Cardinals will match up in a Sunday showdown at the KFC Yum! Center. The contest will mark the fourth all-time meeting between Mason and Louisville on the hardwood.

Louisville returns the majority of its roster from a 2016-17 squad that posted a 25-9 record, including a 12-6 mark in the ACC. The Cardinals reached the NCAA Round of 32, falling to Michigan 73-69.

Louisville also will welcome a star-studded recruiting class ranked No. 6 in the nation by ESPN and No. 8 by Rivals.com.

Man, a game on the road against a team of that caliber so early in the season makes my palms sweat. This team has such a steadily growing confidence as it climbs out of the pit of feces. I just hope they can compete and don't suffer some sort of 30-point beat down. I know this is a Coach Paulsen led team, I just need to keep telling myself that. And I guess the benefit of it being so early in the season (the second game maybe?) is that they will be just as rusty as we are.

Best thing about this type of game is that it can be a 30 pt beat down, and not mean much. Louisville is the caliber team to put some 30 pt beat downs on other top 25 teams, so it's no risk IMO to play them. If we get beat down it should just be one of those "see, this is how far we have to go to be able to compete with a top team, have to work even harder" kind of moments.

Realistically, you hope to keep it close before they pull away at the end and win by less than 15.

Ideally, we beat them :)

Absolutely, this game is all upside for us.

Nobody expects us to win. And yet it's an early measuring stick for where our young guys are in their development.

Also, this is the kind of game our staff will be able to point out on the recruiting trail. Kids go to A-10 schools because they want to play big-time opponents, get on TV and go to the NCAA tournament.

Doesn't matter if we win or lose by 30. If we want to be a legit program these are the types of games we have to play.

Nice to get a road game at a high-level program. I'm sure this will be televised as all Louisville's games are on TV somewhere. And we get paid $$$ too.

Michigan State in 2005 versus Michigan State in 2006 (I know this was a close game, but experience playing the big boys, even in a loss, leads to confidence down the line)?

I think we also got beat down by UNC in 2004 115-81. Two years later...
