From the Cornell basketball message board:

"2) Non Conference Schedule: Definitely not as tough as last year, so there's a lot of room to improve on that win total.
Teams they should be able to beat Without any Trouble:
Bingo
Umass Lowell
Alfred State
Howard
St Peter's

Teams they should beat if Things are Going Well:
George Mason
Charlotte
Canisius
Radford
Loyola
Colgate
Buffalo

No Chance:
Siena
Syracuse
South Carolina
Penn State

So looking at this, I think a 9-7 Non Conference Record is about where the target is for this year."

I was checking out the Cornell basketball board too. Apparently they're getting a good rebounder/scorer back by the name of Moore. (injured last year) I'd be furious if we lose to Cornell, but not surprised. GMU ain't gonna lose to the Big Red because of less talent, that's for sure.

Wow - Siena in the "no chance" category. They were awful just two years ago. Guess Patsos turned things around quickly. Our new guy didn't have anything to turn around - just maintain. Sigh.

The former 1st Team All-Ivy player who is returning from an injury is Shonn Miller.

So, Mason will play the maximum 2 preseason contests (a closed scrimmage vs. Georgetown & an exhibition game vs. Shenandoah) & an exhibition game vs. Catawba on December 17.
What evidence do you have that the game against Catawba is an exhibition?

It's labeled as an exhibition game on their schedule, but not on ours. Exhibition or not, we're playing f***ing Catawba in the middle of December.

I think any time a non-D1 school plays a D1 school, it counts as an exhibition for the non-D1 school. And D1 schools only get a maximum of 2 exhibitions or closed scrimmages per season, which we've already accounted for without including Catawba. But maybe there's an NCAA rule I'm not aware of.

The real question is whether playing Catawba is better than playing no one and wasting the extra spot in the schedule. The staff clearly wasn't able to fill the spot in the schedule with a D1 team -- we saw the ad on basketball travelers for months. A lot of schools (not just us) had trouble filling their OOC schedules this season for some reason, maybe because the season is 1 week shorter than usual. Thanks NCAA!

I don't think it counts as an exhibition for us, but it won't count toward our NCAA tournament profile (ha!) either because the committee only considers results vs. D-I opponents.
Yep. So it's actually better than playing an RPI 300 school like Cornell (329 last year)

Drexel was begging for a game in Dec. LSU needed two. It looks bad. At least ask catholic U or Howard to come get paid.

Unless Cornell skyrockets to say 110. Scheduling is an art. See former staff. They could pick schools a year in advance that finished tops in their league and thus benefited our rpi. They weren't exact, but pretty good at it.

Jim,

After reading the NCAA bylaws, I agree that it will count as a regular season game for Mason (unless there is an obscure NCAA rule that exempts the game because it's not being played at Mason's usual basketball facility). Frankly, I didn't believe that the A10 allows its schools to schedule regular season men's basketball games vs. non-D-1 schools.

I didn't either. The only thing I can think is that since we were picked to finish 13th, the A-10 would rather have us play God-awful teams than schedule legit teams and drag down the conference RPI by getting our a** kicked.

Drexel would have been a good pull.

Someone needs to explain why we didn't get a home and home with Madison going. That would have made the most sense.
