High School Sports? lol. that's small potatoes.
Maybe you didn't understand. I'm saying if more kids are already accustomed to showing up and cheering for their hs team, they will also come out while in college. For some of our student body, coming to a bball game is a foreign concept and probably why they just sit there.

As a student in ‘01-‘05 I almost never saw games advertised on campus and didn’t really know where to go to claim my tickets. Nothing was prominently displayed or promoted so none of this shocks me. Driving attendance was never a priority it seemed.

Not really. I've sat in HS gyms where people were standing all the way around the court, kids incessantly banging on the risers, pep bands playing. It was so loud you couldn't talk to your neighbor without yelling, and even then....
And then there are the State Championship games at the Vines Center at Liberty and the Seigal Center at vcu.
Definitely NOT small potatoes.

So that's what those gallon jugs everyone was carrying around at the tailgate. Honestly just sounds like personalized jungle juice.
My daughter is a student at Virginia Tech, and I couldn't get over the number of students walking around with those gallon jugs at the football tailgate we attended last September.

Patriot Center felt like old CAA days yesterday. Every seat may not have sold, but I'd be damned if it didn't feel like it. What a time to be alive!

Also, I really like that Tony keeps beating the drum for playing vcu twice a year. That really needs to be a thing.
I mean, it’s great for fans but it’s also in our own best interest with their consistently high NET. I suspect with UMass gone we’ll end up replacing them as vcu’s last home/away. The A10 would be crazy not to.

Stop complaining about this when you don’t go yourself. It’s getting tiring. Just root for the team man
Hey man he posts on r/GMU, cut him some slack.

That's a good point about UMass leaving. I hope you're right.

One thing that was not said here about the game yesterday:

At the end of the game, they played a video on the screen of KD Johnson and Jared Billups (mostly Jared Billups) with sound bars going up and up and in the video, Jared was saying like "Get loud Mason Nation! I can't hear you!"

The crowd in EBA saw that and got louder and louder. The atmosphere yesterday was awesome and very loud

Hopefully they do that for the rest of the home games this season and for future seasons going forward

I was on campus from 03-08 and I remember from day 1:

1) very large “game today” banners in the jc
2) signage about mason athletics game of the week being posted in many areas (jc sub1 sub2 resident halls)
3) at least 1 email a week about game of the week with details on tickets from ruge
4) signs around campus saying “basketball game today

I've noticed that the last couple games. They've also started bringing the t-shirt gun out in the timeouts toward the end of the game to keep the crowd on their feet. All of these things are helping to shape the culture. The folks remaining seated were definitely in the minority. The wine and cheese crowd, or whatever we're calling them have been put on notice. Either join in on the fun or get beer spilled on you while we cheer on our team.

All fine but until the students, Doc Nix, and the cheerleaders are in unison it will be a meh crowd with some sporadic spikes of energy. Pull up a K State, Utah State or even a VT crowd!

Anybody know if Quigley is still with the team? I haven't heard anything about him for quite some time. I imagine he is a lock for the portal this summer.

Well, there used to be a portion of the cheer squad that would be on the bleachers next to the green machine that could coordinate cheers via hand signals. Once they decimated the funding for cheer a few years ago and went down to one cheer team (used to be a coed and an all-girls team), they didn't have enough bodies to have cheer leaders over there.

I was wondering too. Thinking he may be trying for a medical redshirt or something given the timeframe since he has played.

I know there was talk at one point about having a redshirt rule similar to football where players could play a portion of the season without losing eligibility, but I don’t know if there is still momentum behind that rule change.

The students Mason attracts now are those who don’t care about athletics. If athletics were a priority, they wouldn’t have applied to Mason.

The 2011 run drew great crowds because many students chose Mason due to the excitement of the 2006 run

It is also possible/likely that as the most (one of the most) culturally diverse student populations in the country, our students come from countries where soccer, cricket, etc. are far more popular, or from countries where sports are not as important a part of their culture.
