Xavier Johnson commits to Mason

So, after XJ's first year, how do we feel?

The hitch in the shot ended up being a problem, but the athleticism and physicality translated, in my opinion.

I'd call it a successful freshman year, and I'm honestly quite comfortable with him and Hartwell as the PG rotation next season (pending Polite).

If he can shoot 32% from three or so, so teams can't just back off and DARE him to shoot it, it makes him a far more effective player.

If he’s going to play starters minutes he doesn’t have to become a scoring point guard necessarily but he can’t have any more games where he only takes one or two shots either.

Love the kid and can’t wait to see what’s next. He has the body of a Bryan Allen and the ability of Marquis Moore.

I’d love for him and polite to take the guard play to the next level thats needed in the a10. I think as long as he shoots over 30 percent from deep and adds to his all around game he will be a very special player.

XJ came out strong and showed his potential from the Navy game on - one of the more impressive freshman debuts that I can remember. Fell off in the backend of A-10 play a bit, but I expect him to have a nice career in Fairfax. As things stood at the end of the season, I'd prefer him starting over Hartwell. I hope his shot comes with time, and I hope he is the new standard when it comes to the type of recruits that the staff gets on campus.

Apparently he was dealing with tendinitis in his knee for the 2nd half of the season. Would explain part of the drop off in A-10 play late in the season.

Very happy with XJ last year... Much like I do not like unathletic bigs, I also typically don't like guards that can't shoot... but XJ has other factors that change my opinion. Love his tenacity on offense. I think his defense is pretty damn bad to be honest on ball but that can be fixed with better preparation (he has all the tools to be an elite defender athletically) Lets face it last year was ole defense on the perimeter by everyone not named Javon and AJ would either bail them out with a block or they would score.

Looking forward to seeing XJ improvements and praying we can sign his little bro.

Episcopal PG Xavier Johnson has given Mason a verbal commitment. Looks like it’s him and Hartwell manning the PG spot once Otis is gone.

Good pickup for Mason. Another underrecruited kid with basketball in his DNA.

One scholarship available for 2019.
This thread needs to be renamed Welcome Xavier Johnson, btw. We have rules here ;)
