Infighting aside, this does lend itself to an interesting discussion about what actually constitutes an assist (maybe Five Two can chime in here). If I pass the ball to gmujim on the wing and he dribbles five times before scoring, do I get an assist? How about 3 dribbles? One dribble? How much of an advantage does a scorer have to create by himself before the distributor of the ball no longer gets credit for passing it to him?
There is no question our "offensive strategy" (oxymoron?) lends itself to one-on-one play, but I've always considered assists to be the most subjective stat in basketball. It's one thing to give me an assist for a nifty give-and-go bucket, but why should I get credit for throwing the ball to Will Thomas in the post when he is the one doing all the work?
