When Mason signed the naming rights deal with Eagle Bank, they should have choose an Eagle as a mascot. Instead they went with a creepy looking fan for a mascot

Green and Gold William Wallace has been there since what 2006, 2007? If they were going to do anything it should have been to do nothing, because inscrutable/nonsensical mascots are very endearing to the fanbase (see: Gritty).

Why would we change our mascot for a temporary deal with a corporate sponsor?
Because an Eagle is a patriotic symbol.

The ugly green and yellow patriot is not.

I would actually rather no mascot than the ugly patriot.

Are you really complaining about a mascot? Mascots are supposed to be kind of dumb, that's what makes them mascots.

And if you really want to get literal about it: an Eagle, while a symbol of the U.S., is not in fact a "patriot," it cannot be due to an eagle's nature; but a guy dressed up as a Minute Man in full Mason colored war paint is, in fact, a patriot.

But really, do you go out there and look at other mascots and go...man, that's really cool a** looking mascot?

"The Patriot" is stupid. I remember when they announced the naming contest and then the big reveal that we chose "the patriot" as the name at a basketball game (or was it Mason madness?). The whole crowd groaned.
"George Mason, where innovation is tradition . . . and our Patriot mascot's name is "The Patriot"".

It’s just my opinion, chill out.

When all is good in the world of Mason basketball we have a pissing match about a dumb mascot. Lol

I’m not a huge fan of the Mascot but I could honestly careless. I don’t think the patriot adds or subtracts from the marketability of the school. Using a lacking logo and 50 shades of green and gold does.

Lol this made me laugh. You’re right.
Maybe my issue isn’t so much the mascot but the logo. Some universities use their mascot as the basis for their university logo (Texas Longhorns, Michigan ST Spartans, Clemson Tigers)

Yes, our logo stinks. Only marginally better than the synchronized swimming ribbons of the '90s.
An angry Patriot maybe? I know I'm probably the only one who feels this way, but one logo could be the M with the green and gold quill at the top. Classic look, imo.

I was very close to having the star with the ribbons tattooed on my back when I was swimming at Mason prior to new logo.

Not really complaining, just voicing opinions. Which I think is still ok.
But, as long as we have a mascot, why not have one that everyone kinda sorta likes? Like Gunston. Cute. Harmless. Kid friendly.

Don't quite know how to respond to that, but as my dear mother used to say "more power to you."

I've talked at length before about how our logo is lame and we should just go with the GM letters (or GMU if we want to get fancy).

The Patriot is also dumb and at least Gunston embraces that mascots are kinda stupid so might as well make it fun.

Even as a kid in college I was smart enough not to do it. Lol. But it was a glimmering thought back when basically everything I wore was Mason swim team gear.

Kid friendly? Do you realize how many small children needed therapy due to that creepy mascot? I had one friend who couldn't bring his 3-year-old son to games for most of one season, because he was traumatized by that big, green, creepy blob.

Plus, it made no sense for our school name or nickname. When I was in Dayton for the 2006 NCAAT and was walking the concourse after we upset Michigan State, I had fans from other schools saying, "Congrats! WTF is your mascot supposed to be?"

The current Patriot might not be perfect, but at least it makes sense and doesn't look like deformed muppet on steroids.

Wow! Anger issues? And sorry about your friend's kid, but what's dad gonna do?, blindfold the kid and bubble wrap him? Life happens.
Yes. Harmless.
And as far as the other teams fans, a) who cares what they think? and b) what do you expect from college kids or drunk adults?

Dude, the mascot sucked. The examples I gave were anecdotal, so the personal attack on my kid's son (who is now 19 and doing just fine) was unwarranted. And, yes, our mascot should make sense to our own fans and fans from other schools. I'm sorry you were so attached to it, but the green blob was amateurish and needed to go for many reasons.

And just because somebody refutes one of your many, many posts doesn't mean they have anger issues. It just means they have a different take. I'm happy you found this site. The more fans the better.

I completely agree. But in this PC world it wouldn’t fly. Gunston was named after Gunston Hall, George Mason’s plantation.

First, you said "friend", not grandson. So I apologize. And I agree, family and kids should be off limits, family or otherwise. (As an aside, though, you really don't know what will scare a kid... Santa, you name it.)
Obviously, we disagree on the suckiness of Gunston.
Also, it wasn't your refutation. It really was a harshly worded reponse to a rather benign post. And I didn't know many many posts was a bad thing.
Now, having apologized and responded to your criticisms,
THANKS! It's great to be here! Seriously!
