This year’s Bucknell team is the first primarily comprised of Davis’ recruits. Paulsen, Fischer and Kelly recruited the core of the team that won the last 3 Patriot League regular-season titles.

I know that doesn’t fit your narrative but it’s true.

Actually, the two best players on Bucknell’s team This year are two seniors, both DP recruits.

Honestly does DP get another extension after this season?
No. I still stand by that he is just a step towards the coach we really need. He was the best we could get after Hewitt.

My frustration continues to grow. DP said to judge him based on two years. Well Dave, you currently sit at 31 - 29 for your last two years. We haven't sniffed an NIT or NCAA bid. I wouldn't call that success. You claimed that Rueter was A10 POY material and while he has had some bright spots he isn't exactly a dominant force now is he? Dave, is it that you don't know? Or that you don't know that you don't know?

Definitely frustrating. The start this year was awful. The team still has a lot of growing up to do, and hopefully Reuter Kier and Boyd can be effective senior team leaders next year which will lead to more wins. He’s brought the program to respectability in conference, but it’s definitely time to take the next step. Unfortunately the teams depth has been depleted by injuries but they have to find a way.

He also assumed he would have a healthy Grayer, Mar, Calixte and Boyd.

Think those injuries might be catching up with us just a bit?

The insistence on blaming our coach for everything short of 9/11 and kindnapping the Lindbergh baby has now reached pathological levels.

They were 2-5 with everyone healthy and that’s with extra games and practices in Spain

Caveat, Grayer was never fully healthy.

You can blame Paulsen for playing Reuter too many minutes to start the season, and that probably cost us a few of those early games. You can also blame Paulsen for the early defensive scheme that led to too many easy layups, which definitely cost us a few games.

Two things he should have done early: one, start the season with the same defensive scheme he ended last season with; and, two, eased Reuter into the rotation and started Calixte.

These are the things I will blame Paulsen for, which essentially boils down to an overly optimistic vision for what this team was capable of doing.

Every team has injuries and mason lost to American with a full roster.

Yes, for the two reasons stated above? Does Sa'eed Nelson get 24 points, pretty much all in the paint (0-1 from 3), if we run pack line and have Calixte instead of Reuter starting in the middle? Does Sam Iorio get a double-double? Probably no to both of those. I'll lay those early season losses on Paulsen, but he adjusted and he's also responsible for the 7-1 start to conference play and a near upset of Kansas State.

It probably also didn't help that Goanar Mar was just utterly flat to start the season. He had 0 points, 0 rebounds, 0 assists, and 1 foul in 15 minutes against American. That's just trash. It doubly didn't help that Grayer's lateral quickness was diminished because of his lingering foot issue, so he couldn't keep guards out of the paint to save his life, but we needed his shooting early on and had to play him more (Otis also came out shooting blanks early in the season).

Now, we're going through a difficult stretch having lost a bunch of players to injuries (this feels a lot like URI the few years before they finally got healthy and made their run to the NCAA tournament). They were picked several times as conference dark horse darlings before injuries destroyed their seasons.

Is he our version of David Gregory?

Uh I think you mean Brian Gregory.

David Gregory is the former host of “Meet the Press.”

Regardless, the answer is “no.” DP will get it done, but it’s a long game he’s playing — hopefully our administration has more patience than our fair-weather fan base.

Another total reboot at this point is the last thing we need.

That's the second or third time I've done that.

I mean, Gregory was given 5 seasons at Tech, and the best he could do was an NIT quarterfinals appearance. He had a decent opportunity to turn that program around.

I mean, if Paulsen has a fully healthy team next year for the full season and can't get it done, I've got to think his seat has to be warm. Losing Otis is no excuse, in my opinion. He's had 5 recruiting cycles to build a team that should be able to absorb the loss of Otis (I mean, this team has already had to move on from one of its seniors, we're only losing 1 player off this year's team essentially), and if we can't that's on him.

I agree with you for the most part but keep in mind that even though he’s had 5 recruiting cycles, recruiting sometimes can be a 2 year relationship building process. Also considering where Mason was, he had to rebuild relationships everywhere. Even if he doesn’t get it done next year, he’s probably around at least 2-3 years since he’s already done a lot more with less. And if anything else both him and Brad can’t go up unless they win at Mason. Both have won at every level, and I can’t see why they won’t here. It unfortunately is just taking longer than we’d all like. I’m willing to give him a long enough leash unless things go backwards.

Dayton was Mason’s only quality win. The a10 is weak this year.

I hear you, but how long would you give him? Next year we have 3 seniors on the roster (Reuter, Kier, Boyd — possibly 4 with Grayer), the year after that another 3 (Greene, AJ, Calixte). That’s a lot of experience leaving after year 6. Seven years without a meaningful post season (and I’ll be generous and say an NIT bid is meaningful for this purpose) is a ton of time.

I’m cautiously optimistic about next season with Mar coming back from injury and The revelation of Miller as a solid contributor, but the rest of the league is really young this season and might have lapped us. Hopefully our experience means something.

I definitely hear you and I have no idea what the answer to that question is. At some point you have to put the bar to that level. We’ve just seen improvement and development to respectability, but it’s frustrating the next step hasn’t come yet. I’d have to think by year 6 or 7 things will work itself out. This year has been frustrating with the slow start, but then they did improve but unfortunately injuries have appeared to take the toll.

Somehow through all of this, as long as they win one more game they’ll have the most successful a10 regular season win wise. You can do a lot worse than a continued rise to respectability in conference play.

It's been 8 years since our last post season appearance. I hate vcu. I hate vcu. I hate vcu. Yet, they've changed coaches (3 times in the past 8 years) like diapers and, assuming they dance this year, will have managed to do so 8 out of the last 9 years. I don't buy that it takes forever to build a program. Larranaga did it in 2 years. I'm not supposed to be critical of DP because he sits under .500 near the end of his 4th year? We should expect to wait another 2 or 3 years for him to get us to the dance? You're happy waiting 10 - 15 years between post season appearances? I'm not.

I know he will be our coach for the next few years. Brad will no doubt extend him again. So, I guess I'll temper my expectations, hope for .500, become like the old farts in 115 and tell people around me to keep it down, and drink heavily at Brion's before stumbling across the street to watch yet another home loss. Or, maybe I'll take up origami and trimming bonsai trees which may just be the route to eternal peace and happiness.

All I ask is that before my 85th birthday we dance just one more time.
