Thank You D'Shawn Schwartz

He was 4 stars coming out of high school. Best we've had. DP would be fighting for 1 star scraps with Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow and Sister Teresa's School for the Blind.
Stars stop mattering the minute you step on campus.

You know what DOESN'T stop mattering? Being a career 36% 3point shooter, and a guy who shot 40% from 3 last year (on 4 attempts per game). He's the best shooter on the team the instant he arrives.

This is very, very encouraging re: English.

Forgot about Royal. My comment about Copes applies to him too. How in the world did either one of them ever get 4 stars!?

Some guys just don't pan out (see: Jermaine Harris of URI). But Copes certainly had potential, he just never capitalized on it (wrong coach, wrong mindset). Example, he had 7 blocks against Drexel in basically a half his freshman year. He's sixth all-time in blocks in a single season just behind Mike Morrison and 5th all-time in total blocked shots, and that's for a guy who only averaged 20 mpg for his career. A physically dominant player that just never got better on the offensive side.

royal I think was a stud in high school but never panned out. I think copes always was highly regarded defensively and for rebounding. His hip injury held him back but also his attitude, obviously.

Ah yes, the hip. Forgot about that.

very much so. Amazing how within two weeks he can land a 4star player yet in all of Dave’s time he could never land anything close to this level of talent. Need to know how to coach well and recruit well (sounds so simple) but so far English is on fire. Excited on what is to come for this team as they pivot from the bottom..

I think you missed my point. The fact that he was a four star means nothing. The fact that he shot 40% from 3 means everything.

Transfer's high school recruiting rankings should be entirely disregarded, as they are a piss-poor substitute for what really matters: what kind of college player they are.

The best way to tell what kind of college player somebody is likely to be is what kind of college player they have been, not what they did several years in the past. Shwartz has been a good shooter in college with good size. That means he's likely to be a good shooter with good size for us.

That's a big win, but it has nothing to do with his H.S. stars. Stars are useful for evaluating H.S. players, that's it.

I'm looking for big things from him and Cooper on the offensive end. If both average 14-15 we have the chance to surprise a lot of people. He should be one of the main options at Mason as opposed to the 3rd or 4th option at Colorado.

"Classroom
Schwartz is currently enrolled in George Mason's Master's in Business Analytics program.
He hopes to pursue a career as a music producer when his playing career has finished.

Schwartz graduated from Colorado in May 2021, earning his degree in business administration. He carried a 3.18 GPA and was named a 2020 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar. Diverse Magazine created the award to honor students of color who exemplify the standards set by the great Arthur Ashe Jr. In addition, Schwartz was named to the 2018-19 Pac-12 All-Academic second team.

Character
Schwartz is of extremely high character and leads by example. He as only missed one practice in five years, which was due to a broken nose. Schwartz's sense of determination is inspirational to his teammates and motivates them to work even harder."

"Community
Schwartz was selected as one of only four recipients of the Byron R. White Leadership and Initiative Award at Colorado. It's given to student-athletes who have exhibited outstanding initiative and demonstrated a strong commitment to service to the CU and Boulder communities.

He also worked with Colorado's Academic Futures Department to submit a Community White Paper called 'Building a Community via a Recording Space,' where he asked the university to create a studio and recording space for students.

In his time at George Mason, Schwartz has served the greater Fairfax and Washington D.C., area at basketball clinics and town festivals.

Competition
Schwartz has made a tremendous impact in his first season in Fairfax. He ranks second on the team in scoring and 3-pointers made and third in rebounding. He led Mason with 26 points in the program's first ever road win over a ranked team – a 71-66 win at #21 Maryland on Nov. 17. He also tallied a career-best 29 points in Mason's game vs. South Dakota State in the Crossover Classic."

Was watching the Davidson-LaSalle game today....during the half, Dr. G who was covering the game did a quick piece on Schwartz as one of 2 transfers having an impact on the A10 (Quisenberry for Fordham was the other one).

Also featured Oduro as the most improved player "putting up conference player of the year" numbers.

There were video highlights as well for each of the players.

Nice recognition and well-deserved!

Was just thinking: when was the last time you could consider Mason was a dangerous shooting team? It’s been awhiiiiiile. Schwartz is a big part of that (all three of our big transfers are, to be honest).
Have been reflecting on this as well. While our 2006 squad def had guys who could knock down the three, the 1987-1988 team may have been our best. Brian Miller, Amp Davis, Steve Smith, and Earl Moore were lights out shooters from deep.

I remember, Amp Davis hitting 9 threes against ODU (may have been the following year).

That team didn't shoot as many 3s as this year's version - the 3 pt shot wasn't as valued then - but I have no doubt that you could take those guys and put them on the floor today and have success. And that 1987 team WAS successful. Can't mention that team without mentioning our 20 PPG scorer: Kenny "The Chemist" Sanders. Was a fun team to watch.

Don’t sleep on the 2011 team:

Ryan Pearson: 40%
Cam Long: 43.2%
Andre Cornelius: 38.6%
Luke Hancock: 35.9%
Ike Tate: 41.2%
Vertrail Vaughans: 49.3%
You're right! I did think about this group but kind of figured they were on par with our 2006 squad. The numbers tell a different story. Should have done more due diligence.
