Still Waiting for Erik Copes

He has been working pretty hard on the boards these past couple games. Maybe he's back to this original agenda of being the best rebounder in the league.

I agree, however there was a 6 minutes stretch at the beginning of the 2nd half that was the the Copes show...blocking... rebounding... scoring... repeat.

yea--the A10 announcers from Umass and even Kellogg in the post game press conference were giving him very high praise and deservedly so.

Forgive me, but I'll look for just a little more than one good game before enshrining Dopes into the Hall of Fame.

But seriously.....Im ready to hang Copes' jersey next to Birdsongs in the "What Might Have Been" gallery of the Patriots HOF.
I think J2 is a more valid comparison to Birdsong. J2 is a larger Birdsong who was highly recruited (not sure Birdsong was). We all thought J2 would be an impact player...turns out Hancock was the impact player in that class...

Also, let's not forget the effect asthma had on Birdsong's career.

Is this the Birdsong thread now?

Yes, highly recruited.

Played out of position over lack of depth at PF position (transfers & Montoe injury)

Pearson bumped him out of PF role and by the time he was able to get a shot at PF, he was a Sr and hadn't developed those skills and that position enough

Kind of got a raw deal over the needs of the team beating out what was best for himself.

I doubt even with more time at SF Birdsong would have ever excelled.

Birdsong, Urbina, Vaughn Grey...when I hear from assistants to watch out for a guy this year, it's almost the kiss of death.

QD, every time Birdsong comes up in a thread you are very complementary / defensive about his time here. Just curious, do you know him outside of just watching him at Mason or do you generally just like him?

Erik's foul rate this year is higher than it has been his whole career. With 390 minutes played and 74 personal fouls, he's averaging one foul every 5.2 minutes of court time. That's 26 minutes before fouling out.

Junior year: 390 minutes/74 fouls = 5.2 minutes/foul
Sophomore year: 849 minutes/99 fouls = 8.6 minutes/foul
Freshman year: 405 minutes/62 fouls = 6.5 minutes/foul

His rate of blocks per 40 minutes is slightly better than his sophomore year, but nowhere near what he teased us with his freshman year:

Junior year: 390 minutes/23 blocks = 2.4 blocks per 40 minutes
Sophomore year: 849 minutes/39 blocks = 1.8 blocks per 40
Freshman year: 405 minutes/51 blocks = 5.0 blocks per 40

His combined personal fouls + turnovers exceed his total rebounds for the year:

74 fouls + 26 turnovers >> 94 rebounds

For comparison's sake, Juvonte Reddic has about 2x as many rebounds as combined fouls + turnovers (226 rebounds >>> 62 fouls + 45 turnovers). Cody Lalanne (UMass) also has about a 2x ratio: 223 rebounds >>> 66 fouls + 47 turnovers.

The question is, is anyone still waiting for Erik Copes?

While trying to stay positive, would you prefer that the thread be renamed "Still Waiting for the Junior Class"?

Unfortunately, it would be accurate. We've gotten a whole bunch of nothing from the juniors this year. Between Erik, Corey and Okoloji being ineffective and Gray's inexplicable benching, it's been a disastrous season for that group.
